Hi--
I recently was taken off Topamax due to allergic reaction to the drug (rash/600mgs daily). My doc is NOW saying he may want to try me on Zonisimide instead. I am taking this primarily for weightloss...Please: anyone out there with experience taking Zonisimide? And Topamax? I would love to know a comparison. Topamax wasn't my favorite due to all the weirde side effects, but Zonisimide sounds like the same drug, pretty much. He says there's less indication that it helps as well for weightloss (as compared to Topamax).
He also says there are no other truly effective weightloss medications on the market. Wow. That's depressing! Unless anyone out there has any drugs I should do some research on...Help me out!

I hope you're all enjoying your summer!

> I hope you're all enjoying your summer!Yes. I have been on both... but for epilepsy...anyway, awhile ago I was taking Topamax (400mg) (along with other meds) I Had to quit the topamax because of efficacy problems, and dysnomia. I switched to Zonisamide (Zonegran) which I liked MUCH better, it felt a lot "cleaner" than topamax.
Here is a study regarding Zonegran and weight loss

THANK YOU! You are the first person to help me after searching for answers.
Can you tell me, how long were you on Zonisamide and at what dosages? What side effects did you experience? Did you experience any weightloss? Should I persue this drug or no? I am leary of reliving the same drug with just a different name.
Thank you, in advance, for your time and insights.

> --->PodwomanI was on it for some time (several months) I think I only took 100mgs 2x a day....For me, there were no side-effects...Im sorry, I cant help you on the weight issue, I never gained or loss weight while on topamax or zonegran...but I was also taking other meds (for both epilepsy and major depression/social phobia) I was on Nardil at the time, and Nardil seems to cause weight gain in a lot of people from what I hear, but I never gained any weight, so maybe the zonegran helped with that, but Im not sure... Zonegran and Topamax are very different drugs, zonegran has some positive effects on dopamine
