It's Gal again. Boy do I have a lot of questions, this board is great! Has anyone heard of Cogentin? I did some searches on it, but didn't come up with much at all. What is it mainly used for and has anyone heard of it being used for sleep? Is anyone on it? Has anyone here ever taken it? Does it help? What does it help with?
Thank you for understanding all my questions. Any feedback would surely be appreciated.

Cogentin, or benztropine, is an anticholinergic used to combat the movement side effects of anti-psychotic medications. It is also used in the treatment of Parkinson's Disease. It improves muscle control and decreases the stiffness and tremors.

jlo, I forgot to ask, you may know.... I'm not on any anti-psychotics, however I, for some reason, get a "restless leg" type syndrome at night often when i try to go to sleep. My doctor gave me Cogentin to help this. Does this sound right to you? Does this sound right to anyone? Any feedback would be great.

The use of Cogentin (or any anticholinergics) to treat Restless Leg Syndrome is new to me. I have never heard of this. I have listed the drugs used to treat Restless Leg Syndrome below. Perhaps your doctor thinks it is something other than RLS.
Let me know if you have more ?'s.
Levodopa: start with half of 25/100 tablet qHS and titrate up.
Dopamine agonists: Pergolide (Permax) 0.05-1.0 mg
Bromocriptine (Parlodel) 1.25-10 mg
Pramipexole (Mirapex) 0.125-4.5 mg
Ropinirole (Requip) 0.25-24 mgBenzodiazepine: Clonazepam (Klonopin) 0.25-1.5 mg
Diazepam (Valium) 2-15 mgOpioids: Propoxyphene (Darvocet) 50-200 mg
Codeine (Tylenol #3) 30-60 mg
Other: Gabapentin (Neurontin): 300 - 600 mg
Clonidine (Catapres) 0.1-0.3 mg
Baclofen (Lioresal) 10-80 mg
Carbamazepine (Tegretol) 200-600

Thank you! That was very kind of you and is much appreciated. I have some good info here. When I asked my doctor the other day he just bipassed my concern, so I don't know what else to think. I take Klonopin and from what you found here, the Klonopin should help, but it hasn't seemed to. I was on Neurontin for about a month then taken off-it could be withdrawals from that.

I've taken it for EPS from risperdal (an AP) and it worked quite well with a low side-effect profile. I think it's worth a shot for your RLS, especially since the klonopin isn't helping.

thanks judy, I've been taking Cogentin for about 3 weeks now, sometimes it helps with the RLS, and sometimes it doesn't. I have to say, though, that the RLS seems to be improving very much. I was recently taken off Seroquel (about 2 months ago) and I was thinking it may have caused some agitation-don't know. I was also taken off cold turkey of Klonopin by a doctor who I feel was wrong in doing so, and that may have had even more to do with the Reslestness. But overall, this Cogentin is a seemingly good med for me to take at bedtime. It helps me sleep, and I don't seem to get any major, bothersome side effects from it. **You said it had a low-profile of side effects for you? What, if any, side effects did you get, can you remember? I have been on Klonopin for about 3 years and I still take 2mg-I haven't seemed to built up tolerance yet-is that what they call it???? But, you're right, I don't think the Klonopin is helping much with these restless legs when they do get bad, so that's where the Cogentin comes in.
