Severe Insomnia, switching from lexapro to effexor

Posted by prodgirl on July 3, 2003, at 5:23:55

If any one has any suggestions, I am open to anything!

I started switching over from Lexapro to Effexor XR 8 days ago. I was already having insomnia issues, where Trazadone wasn't working anymore. As I'm switching over, I literally can't sleep. Can't fall asleep, verge of anxiety attack in bed. I'm used to the odd dreams, but when you sleep 20 min, roll around for 20, and back to sleep, it gets old fast. She gave me Ambien 10mg on Monday. Didn't put me to sleep. Once I managed to fall asleep, it was for 3.5 hours, then I awoke, FULLY awake and started becoming obsessive about how my bed was, and crazy stuff. Tuesday night, I self adjusted to Ambien 20mg, but found the same situation. Wednesday night, 10 mg knocked me on my ass (because I'm so exahused), but I full woke up after 3 hours. Aren't you only supposed to take Amnbien when you can devote 7-8 hours to sleep? (tounge in cheek)

I take my ADs at night. Maybe this has something to do with it. I take a multi, fiber and acidophilus suppliments, allegry and stomach meds in the morning. I don't know if I can handle my ADs on top? Lots of water, veges, fruit. Any suggestions? I'll do anything now for some sleep!

effexor is very activating, and needs to be taken in the morning for almost all people.

If insomnia persists with treatement, ask your doctor about remeron. If you were having insomnia on SSRI's then this should be a good alternative.
Taken at night, you will sleep the whole night.

After reading posts here about folks taking it in the AM, my dr totally agreed with me. Although, I will say, I felt like I was on an upper and had the shakes. No damn wonder I couldn't sleep! Although, I'm still relying on the ambien.

hi prodgirl, yeppers, whenever I *thought* I could outsmart Effexor by taking it at night-I failed every time. I was up all night high as a kite with the shakes and cleaning house, mind racing like the Indy 500. My doc just asked me if it made me sleepy and if it did take it in the pm-if not take it in the am-common sense huh? LOL SO, do you take the Effexor in the am now? Isn't Ambien successful?! 10 mg worked wonders for me when I was in the hospital at one time-but I don't take it now.
take it easy

It's only been two days taking it in the AM, but I totally get the shakes. I slept a little better the past two nights, but the ambien only gets me through 3 hours, then I'm wide awake, and take another. I hope the effexor works better once I get through this transitiion!

Once I got through the transition-the shakes went away with me when I first started Effexor but it took some time. I wish the same for you.
hang in there!
