How is it that a store here sells L-tryptophan?

Posted by Ame Sans Vie on June 20, 2003, at 7:32:36

I went to my local health food store yesterday to pick up a few things, and was surprised to see that they sold large bottles of L-tryptophan for $39.95. Is this legal? Has the ban been lifted? Most importantly, do you think the stuff is safe? I'm really considering adding it to my med regimen, and the store is part of a very reputable chain of health stores. Thanks!

lol, I dunno, it must be legal. It's being sold at Basic Foods, which is a chain health food store. And the label distinctly identifies it as 'L-tryptophan', NOT 5-HTP or anything like that. I'll have to look further into this.

While I know Erowid.com isn't the best source of drug information out there, this just may explain it:

http://www.erowid.org/smarts/tryptophan/tryptophan_law.shtml

"There is some confusion added by a statement by the FDA from February, 2001 which states:

Although FDA continues to enunciate its concern about the safety of dietary supplements containing L-tryptophan and related compounds such as L-5-hydroxytryptophan, this does not mean that FDA prohibits the marketing of dietary supplements that contain L-tryptophan. Under the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (the Act), as amended by the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA), the manufacturer is responsible for ensuring that its products are safe. A firm is not required to obtain premarket review or approval from the FDA of its products before marketing them as dietary supplements. Moreover, a firm is not required to submit scientific evidence to FDA of the safety of its products or ingredients. While we are unaware of conclusive scientific data that would establish that a dietary supplement L-tryptophan would be safe, if a firm has information that it believes establishes that a product containing L-tryptophan is safe within the meaning of the Act, it could market such a product as a dietary supplement. The burden and responsibility for assuring that such a product is not adulterated under the Act is with the firm and not FDA.

This may mean that the FDA has softened its prohibition on the sale of L-Tryptophan containing supplements and these may now be considered 'legal' in the US. Importation of L-Tryptophan is still blocked under this rule."

Thanks James, but what I meant was L-tryptophan by itself, not as one componet of multi-amino acid supplement such as the one at the link you provided.

Typical Amino Acid Profile: Approximate per 3 capsules

L-Alanine 175.5 mg
L-Arginine 160.0 mg
L-Aspartic Acid 214.7mg
L-Cystine 9.2 mg
L-Glutamic Acid 543.4 mg
L-Glycine 280.3 mg
L-Histidine 51.1 mg
L-Isoleucine 66.4 mg
L-Leucine 197.4 mg
L-Lysine 175.8 mg
L-Methionine 58.2 mg
L-Phenylalanine 119.5 mg
L-Proline 337.0 mg
L-Serine 142.8 mg
L-Threonine 79.9 mg
L-Tryptophan 20.6 mg
L-Tyrosine 99.4 mg
L-Valine 96.4 mg
Hydroxylysine 11.1 mg
Hydroxyproline 155.1 mg

Thanks James.

Current policy on the marketing of dietary supplements containing L-tryptophan and related compounds

Although FDA continues to enunciate its concern about the safety of dietary supplements containing L-tryptophan and related compounds such as L-5-hydroxytryptophan, this does not mean that FDA prohibits the marketing of dietary supplements that contain L-tryptophan.

Wow, yeah you're probably right! That is great news! Thanks for sharing. Wow, i should not be getting this exciting about something like this. Last time i was this excited was... well, i dont know. But still it's great news!
Oh, stjames, the difference between tryptophan in a multi- amino acid supplement (like the one showed) and just tryptophan is 1. The tryptophan content in the former is likely to be much lower (was very low in that example given) and 2. The tryptophan is gonna cross the blood brain barrier to a much lesser extent in the former-- bcz it is competing with all the other amino acids. Thats why sbest to take between meals also.
i can't wait to get my hands on some.

That is a given. I was speaking of a legal difference between a multi-supplement and a single agent supplement. There is none, I now see
L-tryp supplements, by themselves, in the US.

Now if I can just get the right DMT salt out L-tryp !
