Can a urinalysis determine the difference

Posted by bernie3 on June 9, 2003, at 10:51:34

I have a question my wife is on klonopin for severe anxietyand I think she has been taking valium also but I have no proof of my suspicion other than she done it in the past.
Can a urinalysis determine the difference between klonopin and valium or are all benzos converted to valium in the bloodstream anyway?

So, you'd like to have proof of what's really going on, e.g. abuse of her meds?

The short answer is that a routine urinalysis for benzos does not tell you which benzo was found. It's non-specific. That's not to say that a thorough testing of urine couldn't differentiate between some benzos, but the molecules appearing in the urine are identical in many cases. So they just screen for that one common molecule.

If you're looking for clear evidence, you need to get a blood sample analyzed. Valium has a very long half-life (around eight days). Klonopin undergoes a number of fairly rapid metabolic conversions that are unique.

A routine urinalysis will not answer your question. A definitive answer can come from blood work. A dedicated researcher may conceivably answer your question from a urine sample, but I'm not sure if that's really possible or not.

alright thanks, I was under the impression that if a benzo showed up in a tox screen, that the sample was than analyzed to determine exactly what type of benzo it was. I assume I was mistaken?

Hi bernie,
Am I the only one uncomfortable with the idea of you wanting your wife to take a urine test? Dumb question maybe, but have you tried talking to her? If she really does have a problem, what would the positive urine test accomplish?

Just wondering.

No, I feel that if you are to this point (covert testing), there
are far bigger issues than drug use.

She will not admit it. I just want some shred of evidence to confront her with. If I have no other proof thatn I really can't confront her.

So does anyone else know if a positive urine sample for benzodiapine from say Labcorp or anywhere else can it be sent out for further testing to determine what type of benzo it contains? thanx in advance.
