New Marijuana bill introduced in Canada

Posted by Squiggles on May 27, 2003, at 7:32:10

It's legal to smoke small amounts
of marijuana in Canada now. I wonder
if it has interactions with ADs and
other drugs people take on a prescription
basis.

I think it's reasonable - it certainly
allows more time for the police to tend
to more serious matters. My husband says
there is only one reason it should not
be legalized - our relations with the
United States :-)

Cheers,

Squiggles

I'm glad they finally did this, so that the police can focus their attention on real crimes (I'm a fellow Canadian by the way, although I've been living in the States for quite a long time).

One minor point though -- marijuana isn't exactly "legal" in Canada, just not criminal anymore. You can still get fined for possession of small amounts, much like a traffic ticket. And, from what I understand, the penalties are still criminal (and major) for producers and distributors. I know the U.S. is upset (as if it's any of their business!), but there are over a dozen states in this country with similar policies, so I can't see why the U.S. is whining so much.

It is a big step forward, in my opinion.
