Am NOT liking Lexapro! Help!

Posted by CJ Nightowl on April 14, 2003, at 23:48:22

Hello everyone,
I have been on Lex for 4 weeks now and just went up to 17 and a half mg. per day. My family was wondering why I was so irritable this past week and my daughter thought I was particularly negative. So I have up'd the dose by a quarter tab and of course now I have the headache that won't go away, the insomnia at night, the fatigue during the day and I am fed up!!
The best A/D I ever experienced emotionally speaking was Zoloft. Unfortunately, it did a real number on my intestines and sex life. Oh yeah, the Lex also has me feeling like sex is totally unnecessary, which makes my husband REAL happy that I switched from Celexa to Lexapro!

I am thinking of trying Prozac, but have heard that it has a stimulating effect on some people. Would that mean I could not take Adderall with it? Does it also mean that the insomnia would remain as well?
What does everybody else take for the sexual s/e and the insomnia?
I also have Fibromyalgia and Hep-C, so it is important that I get restorative sleep and not over load my liver.
Suggestions please!!
CJ

Hello CJ. I am taking Fluoxetine (generic Prozac) and doing okay. I use to take Lexapro, and although it is a good med. it wasn't right for me. I was also told that Prozac is very activating, but I did not experience any side effect other than the initial drowsiness. This side effect is almost completely gone after a month.

May I ask why you discontinued Celexa?

God Bless

i can understand why you dont like lexapro - or any AD for that matter -

*im beginning to see that the people who continually post on here are constantly looking for some relief and if we had it, we would be busy enjoying our depression-free lives instead of looking for solutions or alternatives to address our problems.*

but anyway, i was on prozac and lexapro, and i cant really say that either one of them is better than the other - im on week 4.5 and barely barely starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel.

prozac worked great for me in my 12th week, but by the 5th month, it was as if i was taking a sugar pill, it just stopped working. i adjusted the dosage, changed the time i took them, everything. it just stopped.

i hope you have better luck - although im finding that with severe or major depression (at least the one i have) nothing really works until week 8.

good luck to you!

oh yea, and btw - i had wayyy way less s/e with fluoxetine than with lexapro -

May I ask what dosage of Fluoxetine you were taking before you began to feel better? So it took you 12 weeks before you saw the light at the end of the tunnel. I wish you the best.

Baracuda,
Well said about how we would all like to be enjoying depression free lives!!

Are you saying in regards to week 4.5 that you are on Lexapro now, only? Or are you taking Prozac AND Lexapro together? What s/e are you having with the Lex?

I have been reading about AAD; "Anti depressant Apathy Syndrome" and how stimulents seem to make that go away. But I am also taking 10 mg of Adderall per day and still I can't get going until late in the afternoon and then I can't sleep at night. Oh, if only there were a magic wand to make everything normal again!

Thanks for your reply.
God Bless and Take Care!

CJ - what dose are you on?

CJ - Are you on Lexapro? What dose and for how long? I am on 20 mg Lexapro and am doing a lot better than when I was on Prozac. But as you know, some people do better on Prozac. I think that how well one does on these meds has a lot to do with the dosage. I think that raising the dose can often help.

Hi Bill,
I have just up'd my dose by a quarter tablet. I have 20 mg tablets and started out cutting them in half and now I am breaking the other half in half. So, in plain Englilsh, I am taking 17 and a half mg. as of this past Monday. I think* I am starting to feel better, but I still think I am getting angrier at things than I should be on an anti-depressant. When I was on Zoloft, I felt like I could reason with people and not get all mad at my husband and kids for typical things. Just now, I squealed out of the driveway because my 16 yr old daughter was being a typical 16 yr old little bitch. Nice example for a mother to display, huh!
Anyway..... having had good experience with Zoloft in the past is what makes me want to try Prozac. I had to go off the zoloft because I went to the maximum dosage after a couple years and had really bad intestinal problems from it. No physical problems with Lex, just insomnia. It's the emotional stuff that has me concerned.
Thanks for bein' here!
CJ
