Do I qualify for an MAOI?

Posted by Caleb462 on April 6, 2003, at 1:49:34

I'm thinking about asking my doc if I can be put on Nardil or Parnate. I suffer from OCD/GAD/ADD/SP and recurring, often severe, depression. I've been on Zoloft (100 mg), Paxil (60 mg), Celexa (60 mg) and am currently on Effexor XR (150 mg) and Risperdal (0.5 mg at night). I have never gotten a response to OCD from these drugs. Effexor did help depression for a short while, but it pooped out. I got a partial response for SP from Paxil, but it was not enough.

So my question is... does this qualify as having gone through enough different meds to try an MAOI? I'm thinking my p-doc will probably say no.
But I'm willing to follow the diet and other restrictions if I can finally get a drug that really works.

Also, are most p-docs willing to prescribe MAOIs? Or is there a certain degree of MAOIphobia involved?

Another thing, I know MAOIs are supposed to be great for depression and SP, and I guess OCD too? But what about ADD and GAD? It's quite apparent that I have ADD, but I have yet to be treated for it. I suppose docs thing stimulants would worsen OCD and GAD symptoms.

Thanks to all who reply.

*Theoretically*, Parnate should be good for ADD as it's stimulant-like. I have ADD, GAD, major depression, and God knows what else (after a certain point comorbidities blend into one another) and I've gotten some good results from nortriptyline and buspirone. Definitely major improvement with GAD, and a lot of help with depression. Now I'm trying to focus on ADD, which has improved some with the current meds but I feel there's still room for improvement there. So I'm looking into the possibility of adding a stimulant somewhere down the line. Nortriptyline and buspirone will definitely take aim at your depression and GAD though.

Try Straterra. But keep in mind it and other stims (it's sort of a stim) can't be used with an MAOI unless it's totally done carefully.

Parnate should be good for your ADD. I have ADD and SP. I take Desoxyn, which is good because it doesn't make my anxiety worse. But I need to go on Parnate for my social anxiety.

i took low dose parnate 30 mg for depression and it really helped.. but then i realized i had ADD... so i had to go off it

parnate didn't.. shall we say.. sufficiently address my ADD.. but then i only took 30 mg, maybe it would work at higher dosages ....

i wonder if you could take effexor + stimulant?

do you mind if i ask why you are taking the antipsychotic?

Doc seems to think Risperdal will help obsessions and anxiety, it has done neither.

you know what? i really can't give even a half decent reply without knowing to what degree depression is effecting your life right now (if any!) and how ADD and SP are effecting your life....

i know nothing about OCD, but for SP/ADD/GAD/depression
maybe all you need is Adderall XR + klonopin ???

Depression, SP and ADD are all affecting my life to a tremendous degree right now, particularly depression.

Yeah... well, I'll probably have to find a new doc if I want Adderall + Klonopin.
