AP with stim... smart idea?

Posted by utopizen on March 30, 2003, at 21:37:21

Lots of people on this board take an antipsychotic and an amphetamine. Since one antagonizes dopamine and the other agonizes(?) or whatever, is this a problem?

I read up on this 70's diet pill, Eskatrol ("Fool Button" song was about it). It was a phentoiazine (sp) and dexedrine in a single capsule. The idea was you'd lose weight and the antipsychotic would counter the amphetamine's irritable effects if they were present in the patient.

Taken off-market in the 80's due to widespread abuse, not to mention that taking a first-generation antipsychotic for weight loss is even less justifiable than taking an amphetamine for it, and this pill had both.

I have found that the AP I'm on (2 mg risperdal) increases my need for a stim. I need more adderall on 1.5 mg risperdal than I needed on 1 mg. I just recently went up to 2 mg of risperdal and I am finding that I may need as much as 30 mg adderall (I was only taking 15 mg before). Other AP's like Abilify and Seroquel may not have this effect though according to the psychopharm I just saw. I would love to switch AP's but unfortunately, now is not a good time. Good luck, babs

Risperdal and others can cause mental dulling in some (Risperdal wouldn't let me read a sentence that I could comprehend). Abilify, which I was one for 2 weeks, did not affect my Adderall dosing. In fact, it compelled me to want to organize things more.

I stopped because of akathsia, but I might go back on one if my new doc feels like it, if he combines it with Klonopin. I only have social anxiety and ADD.

I popped some Neurontin that day, but it required dosing at a dose that was high enough to cause somnolence and cognitive "slowness" in me (800 mg).

I'm sure Klonopin could handle it.
