mood stabilizers -

Posted by PuraVida on March 20, 2003, at 15:26:01

I'm trying to figure out if I actully need a mood stabilizer. I mainly have problems with depression and anxiety, and when the depression lifts I do get "on with things" but get burned out quickly. Its like I only have so much steam - I have a great day one day, but not two in a row.

I was taking Neurontin and had headaches, now Topamax and I can't stand the numb feeling I get in my face from just 50 mgs. I am wondering if the reason I am getting such bad side effects is because I don't really need it?

My doc insists that I stay on a mood stabilizer - I'm wondering what to go to next - maybe a "lightwieght" one since I really am not having any problems at all with even being slightly hypomanic (don't I wish!) I have at times not taken the Topa at all, and find that there is really no change, or I am just as depressed as usual.

Any ideas? Thanks -

PV

Why's your doc insist you stay on a mood stabilizer? i don't know if this is your best bet. Just my two cents.

Thanks for your help...

I don't know. I have just started seeing her, and told her of my cycles with anxiety and depression.
And the old doc had tried the Nuerontin, and I had gotten him to let me try Topa.

But now I don't think it is true hypomania - it never lasts for days. If anything, I will get a little hypomanic (racing thoughts, lots of ideas, can't sleep) some nights - if it happens it will wake me up - but by morning its gone.

I think she says that some stablizers help with the anxiety, but ???

Thanks,

PV

Hi PV, sorry to hear you're going through this. Especially with the Topamax. Do you have a diagnosis? I have been there when I have had 1 great day-then a not so great day. I rapid cycle. Have you ever heard of that?
IMHO,it may not necessarily be the fact that you may be getting such bad side effects because you don't really need a mood stabilizer-it just may not be the med for you. Have you tried any other meds besides the Neurontin and Topamax?
Hope to hear back, and hang in there:-)

Hi Kristen,

No - I guess I'll see if I can try something else. I've been at 150 mg Effexor from 75 for a week now, and am still in the hole. I just feel like I want to cry all the time - but I can't - its's a physical sign for me. I have even gotten out of the house this week, but the next day I spend in bed. Hmmm.

Thanks for your support. From your posts, sounds like you are doing pretty well lately - good for you.

PV
