Lamictal in UK

Posted by babak on February 22, 2003, at 14:40:12

Has anyone in UK tried this drug?
I have just had to give up on ECT because of adverse side-effect and I am thinking of asking my pdoc to see if I can try Lamictal.
But I have read about potential life threatening side-effects.

Yes..I live in uk..tried Lamictal. Your doc may not of prescribed the drug before.
The side effects are only dangerous if it is given at high dose at the start..(my doc gave me 100mg instead of 25mg ) and should be increased slowly so be careful and try and find some good info on web to show him/her.
I think the life threatening effect is quite rare (someone else here will know more )
Good luck..it's a great drug for depression!

Thanks>
I am currently on Effexorr & Mirtazapine. Coming off Mirtazapine shouldn't be a problem but coming off effexor is not possible. The best I can do is to reduce to 75Mg per day. Can I try Lamictal while still of Effexor?

The effexor ? Yes.

I got irritable on Lamictal (possible bipolar)-Also had an allergic reaction at the start on Lamictal with swollen lymph nodes but that was the docs fault.
Now on Neurontin and Depakote and effexor.

I have only partially responded to Effexor and one of the main side effects has been complete loss of libido.
I am not bipolar, no one has actually give me a diagnosis.

NHS pay for my treatment i.e the government. But recently I have been thinking of going private and pay for it on my credit card until I either run out credit or get better so that I can work since I haven't been able to work for the last three years.

Does anyone know a good pdoc in London or Sussex area for treatment resistant depression?

The docs CAN help (eventually)..seems they only diagnose when the patient gets extremely ill i.e -dangerous to others and hospitalised.
Having the right doc is the problem--one who is willing to try the many meds available.
Keep trying ...I'm still trying..your doc also does private so you can get meds/help privately--ask him/her.
Also claim disability if you have no money...that's if you aren't already.
Take care.

That is exactly how long I get. 10 minutes every 6 weeks although they are suppose to give you half an hour.
Every time I have seen a NHS pdoc, he/she couldn't wait to get rid of me.
I have now been referred to the "Affective Disorders Unit" in London. Are they any better?

Wow.. that's where I'm going (maudsly) as outpatient but many months away..seems they do that to find out what's wrong when docs are stumped..
Nowadays I feel like a burden because I don't fit into any specific illness--the docs make me feel like that--I can sense that they have given up.

That is exactly how I feel. As if they have given up with me and they just want to pass me on.

But why months away? Maudsly's waiting list is six weeks.

Well , now I'm confused , maybe it'll take that long to read my file : )
Also took a long time for me to be prescribed more than one med.
