Straterra- combine with stims?

Posted by utopizen on February 21, 2003, at 15:25:05

Um, unless my doctor will write a note to all my professors telling them I'm not going to be doing any work for 2 weeks while I wait until Straterra kick in, can someone tell me if this stuff can be combined with a stim?

I'm thinking about going on it, but can't afford 2 weeks of nothing while I wait for it to kick in... I mean, I can barely do work with a stim, but definitely not without anything

I can't tell if you've tried it yet or not, but I certainly didn't want to go near a stim. when I did.

What do you mean you didn't want to go near a stim when you tried it? What did it do?
Just started taking it this morning & so far, nothing seems different. I seem like I did on the Ritalin only more awake... Is that normal?

It sounds fine for you. I just meant I didn't feel at all like I needed or could handle any more stimulant while on the Straterra. For some reason I feel a lot less of a chemical artificial feeling on Ritalin, but maybe that goes away after a while on Strattera. Or maybe for someone like you it isn't even an issue, which is a good thing!

Oh good! I was worrying I couldn't combine a stim for safety reasons, which would be terrible if it meant I couldn't feel any different for the first two weeks

I would still check that out--I haven't heard anything about the combo either way, and it didn't occur to me to ask my doctor about it. I just don't want to say I *know* it's ok to use stims with Strattera, because I don't have the authority. Good luck!

check out the boards on Dr. Amen's ADHD site...I believe I read some posts by moms about their kids taking stims while on strattera. Nothing too informative, but apparently some docs suggest it.

Hi,

Not sure why you're waiting for results from Strattera for 2 weeks? If you check out the prescribing info, it says you should begin to feel effects around day 3. Myself it was day 2. I am currently off after 15 days on med-had a bad virus, thought it was a SE-doc took me off until virus passed. Am supposed to start back tomorrow. Had great results on 18 by the way. After about 6 days actually preferred Strattera to the way I felt on Ritalin. Of course, everyone is different.

What's the deal with Strattera ? After reading about it's chemical action - it basically blocks NE reuptake like Wellbutrin, Effexor and some tricyclics do (not to say it's exactly the same action or chemical relationship). It doesn't have the dopamine enhancing effects of amphetamine or Ritalin and does not cause instant neurotransmitter release. I'm no psychopharmocologist but it would appear that it is closer related to SSRIs than stimulants. Also- in the literature for Strattera, is lists no precautions or interactions with Ritalin.

For those who have switched from a stimulant to Strattera - do you feel any "instant" effects as you would with a stimulant? I'm just curious. It sounds like Strattera is helping a lot of people - and I think that's great.

Last time I checked, its mode of action-- like all the drugs you compare it to and against-- is unknown.

Knowing what chemical it goes after and knowing its mode of action are two completely different things.

I was just wondering what to expect. I just started Straterra yesterday & still can't see much effect.
