Cyclothymic and need help, new to the group!

Posted by zeliva on February 20, 2003, at 1:07:15

I was recently diagnosed with cyclothymia. I was being treated for 3 mo. with depression and gen. anxiety. I was given 40mg Prozac, Xanex, and Ambien. Nothing worked. Now because my new Doc thinks I have cyclothymia he has changed my meds to 20mg Prozac and 25-50mg Seroquel at night for sleep. The seroquel seems to help with my sleep but I seem more down during the day. Are there any kind of stimulants they can give to pick me up during the day. I am kind of new at this meds stuff and I don't really know what is out there that might help me. If anyone has a suggestion, I would really appreciate it. I'm not having hypomania at all. I kind of wish I was so I can get out of this rut I am in.

don't i know the feeling you're describing...

the daytime sedation from seroquel goes away and i found it really helped my moods. after a month, i could not tell where in my cycle i was. that was cool.

how long have you been taking it?

also, i think fish oil is good stuff for bipolar spectrum people. and meditating...

I have only been taking the Seroquel for two weeks. I could not sleep for seems like months until the Seroquel. Last night I took 25mg at 10pm and I just woke up at 11:30am. What does the fish oil do? I have been taking Gingko, I heard it can help with sexual side effect from the SSRI's. That seems to be actually helping with that department. I would always rather be up than down. At least I could get up and do something.

I would try Provigil (modafinil) first -- it was energizing/motivating for me, and free samples are widely available (although prescriptions are expensive if your insurance won't cover it). I had no anxiety or insomnia. It's not highly controlled, so doctors seem quite willing to dispense it. If you can get it, I'd start with about 50 mg and move up from there if necessary.
