Anybody have GOOD results for Lexapro ?

Posted by SBOATRN on February 20, 2003, at 7:23:50

I've read numerous problems people have with it. Did it do anybody ANY good ??? Primarily, looking for people who are only using Lexopro alone or it and an addition of a benzo, prehaps. Would like to know ???

I have had great success with Lexapro. Most people on this site have also had success with it. Don't be discouraged when you read about failures with any given drug.

I've done well on it. See my response on the thread
above "Lexapro seems to be a step down in Antidepressants".
I've had hardly any side effects with it compared to other
ssri's. I'm on 10 mg's. It took about 3 weeks to start
feeling good on it.

How did you feel when you first went on it ?? My primary symptom is anxiety of which Klonopin has been a great help. The draw backs have been some neck pain and the sedation factor that hasn't subsided really well despite it being a while.... that leads to a lack of motivation and drive. Don't know if I fit a classic "depressive" profile. Don't know if the Klonopin has been the "muting" factor or it's just me. Please let me know about the beginning. I had some really not nice experiences on other SSRI's (wasn't on any benzo then) and I feel the first sign of "yuckiness", I'll want to ditch it. I'm trying to explore some options.... Info is appreciated !!!

I remember feeling tired and unmotivated on it at
first...that's about the only side effect I had...it
lasted about 3 weeks and then went away. I'm cyclothymic
and started having some problems with anxiety and cycling, but
my p-doc upped my mood stabilizer dose (Topamax) and that seemed
to take care of that.

Lexapro seems to be more effective than celexa; however, it causes more apathy. I can sleep better now that I'm on lexapro, but I think I'm going to switch back to celexa because my apathy is really taking its toll on my schoolwork.

I switched from Celexa to Lexapro and have not noticed any increased side effects - I was doing well on Celexa and am still doing well on Lexapro.

I have been on it for several months now, and I really like it. I don't have any side effects that would make me want to go off it (no excessive weight gain like Effexor, no depersonalization like Celexa and Zoloft), just some sweating (I live in Miami, it's not like I don't sweat anyhow!), and insomnia, but that is with or without the meds. I don't take anything else except Ativan occasionally for sleeping, and I have been feeling good. I think -- and this is just my personal opinion -- that the apathy people have been complaining about might also be a lack of anxiety -- I have discussed this with my therapist, though no one knows that answer to that problem. There are things I am apathetic about these days that I used to do all the time, but I'm thinking that maybe those are things I may have been compulsive about and without that compulsion I am less interested in them? It's just a theory of mine. Anyhow, I haven't been happier about an SSRI as I have been about Lexapro, but everyone is different....

******Wow, what an idea . . . I hadn't thought of it that way, but I suspect it's true. Will have to ponder that for awhile (apathy and compulsion.) Not for everyone, perhaps, but maybe for those "driven" by a sense of (unrealistic, unfounded) guilt and responsibility . . . which I've had that I remember, since I was a toddler, so I suppose I've had it my whole life . . .

Thanks, ayuda, for giving me something to think about, as usual . . . . Glad to hear you're doing well.

> so no weight gain on lexapro???

That's a loaded question for me. As I've mentioned before, I gained 40 pounds in the 6 months I was on Effexor before going on the Lexapro. Well, the extra weight exacerbated an old foot injury (too much weight on a weak twisted foot, and the size of my thighs keep me from my normal gait). I am in the process of getting fitted for a very expensive foot brace so I can start exercising again. I was always into fitness before this whole AD mess started, and in the past 3 years have gone from a size 8 -- which was big for me, even at age 35 -- to a size 18 -- I know these numbers may not mean anything to a man, but it will to the women who read this. Just in the past year, I went up from a size 10/12 -- I can't fathom how much bigger I am now from the size 6 I was until age 35.

Anyhow, so I am in constant pain from my foot all the way into my lower back. Since I cannot exercise, I cannot do much to lose the weight -- the Lexapro has lessened my appetite, thank goodness, but that has just served to stem the weight gain, and I haven't lost anything yet. I may have gained about 5-8 pounds so far on the Lexapro, NOTHING compared to the Effexor, and I'm not blaming the Lexapro for this.

So this is my long explanation for no, I don't think Lexapro has caused any additional weight problems for me. Once I get this brace, which will be weeks from now, I would love to see if I can actually lose weight while on an AD. I will then also get back on a low-carb diet (I know I could do it now, but I don't feel like cooking with all this pain).

So far, the only s/e that I think I am experiencing from Lexapro is dry mouth, insomnia and excessive sweating. Small price to pay for treating depression.
