my doc says i should take an atypical antipsychotic otherwise ritalin could cause psychosis

i am wondering if its possible to take something else to prevent psychosis instead (mood stabilizer?)

ug ... what do most bipolars do?

If I am correct and I may not be, I don't think bipolars should be taking pstimulants. I will have to research it more.

ummm. what do you do if you suffer from ADD as well as bipolar?

Yes I know what you are saying, but just that the research seems so fuzzy with these to combined conditions. I have read in a few places both antipsychotics and mood stabalizer can complicate ADD symptoms. But nothing was really solid and conclusive.

My guess would just be to try the augmenting of both an atypical antipsychotic and and slow gradual upward dose of a pstimulant, but with a lot of caution. It's just for your sake, that is all I am saying this for. We all react so differently and I hesitate to make universal statements that a person must react a certain way to a medication. Slipping into mania has been living hell for me and I wouldn't wish it on any single living person or thing. Hope that does help.

What meds do you take ?

while shouldn't cause psychosis in normal
people, they make create a mania like psychosis,
as dopamine can do this. SSRI's tend to create
a euphoric mania while some of the others
wellbutrin and stims can cause psychotic mania.

Whatever you do be careful and prudent.
Good luck

ritalin definately gives me a temporary high that precedes calm and focus
same with caffeine ... i'm not sure that "high" isnt what normal people (who can concentrate) feel all the time

thanks...

i'm not taking my two ritalin pills at the same time anymore, and find myself a lot more stable (up)
i'm surprised my doc didn't suggest this

i'm curious... is there much difference in how much mood stabilizers effect ADD vs. antipsychotics?

and is there a big difference between different mood stabilizers and different antipsychotics?

for example, someone just wrote to me that geodon has more of a stimulating effect

thanks for the reply :)
