First Day on Strattera; Turned into a Frog

Posted by ShelliR on February 4, 2003, at 13:58:45

Just kidding about the frog.

Really did start straterra 40mg today, but I seem to have lost the straterra thread.

I'm taking it for depression, not to replace stimulents, which do nothing good for me. I am not diagnosed ADD, but do have some of the symmptoms. My straterra trial is to address depression, and if it works well, get off methadone (now the only drug I'm taking for depression).

Anyway, just logging in as another subject in the PB sample of Straterra starters.

I stopped Stattera after 6 days, probably not a long enough trial, but my cravings and appetite increased, something I do NOT need. Insert says "decreased appetite" and I was so looking forward to that! Also, my PDoc said it Strattera was on the stimulant side, but it's not really a stim. Anyway, didn't help my atypical symptoms. Maybe I've just been on so much sh#$ that all my reuptake receptors, whatever, are whacked to hell.

Hope it is helpful for you and others on this med.

Of course, starting to drink again was really a stupid thing to do. Was on 20mg of Lexapro also.

Shelli, if it works like Provigil, rather than the average stims, it takes a while before yo notice anything. But I know very little about Strattera & can't answer you specifically.

It seems those who posted about Provigil working immediately for them were also the ones where it pooped out & they no longer take it. For me, Provigil took a week or two to work, but it continues to do so faithfully. I still wonder if the immediate effect for others wasn't a hopeful anticipation causing a temporary dopamine boost in their levels. That acts like a powerful stimulant too.

I know this question is about Strattera, but be patient. I think being a skeptic about a med is the best attitude to have when trying it out. Then, if it works, you KNOW it's the med & not your own boost in dopamine & hope.

Thanks, Iso.

Provigal made me so sleepy that I literally spent my two week trial in bed. At least with straterra, I'm feeling nothing. For better or worse, I seem not to have placebo effects with drugs. Since I'm not feeling desperate, I'm in a good place to wait and see. (hopeful? always!)

Take care,

Shelli,
My pdoc said Strattera is more like SSRIs/SNRIs and take about a week or so to start showing effects. Hang in there!

I tried it for one day and became extremely sedated. I'm afraid to try it again -- my pdoc wants me to try it at night, but I am so darn sensitive to these meds that I really balk at trying them now. I have a 3-year-old, and the side effects make it SO difficult to keep up with her!

Anyway, good luck to you. Keep us posted on how it's working for you.

Cindy,

I saw on the last strattera thread that some people were starting straterra by taking minute mgs. Could you try a smaller dose?

Day four: still nothing. I'll probably go up in a week; my pdoc only gave me 40mg pills so unfortunately when I go up I'll have to jump all the way to 80mg.

Three year olds are a handful, but they are so cute that they can almost get away with anything.

Take care,

Shelli

Hey Shelli,

Why not ask your doc if he can add a 10, 18 or 25 to your 40, so you don't have to jump all the way to 80 at one time?

He gave me free samples of the 40mg; he might not have the others "in stock". I suppose I could ask for 3 prescriptions...........

Dividing Strattera

Unfortunately I have a ton of 40mg capsules of strattera and cannot tolerate this high a dose. I went to a natural vitamin store and bought empty gelatin capsules and have been dividing it up. This is always an option (though not totally exact). Strattera's too expensive to keep buying different dosages- especially since they don't make an 80mg capsule- which I think is ridiculous.

Hope this helps!

Hi Shelli,
I think I will try the smaller dose -- thanks, Peter S. for the advice about dividing the capsules. I have a free sample, too, and don't want to have to pay for a prescription for a lower dose yet if it's not going to work.

Thanks again! Shelli, I hope good things start to come of the Strattera for you soon.

They make 60mg, also. I am going to start on them tomorrow. A 60mg in the morning and a 40mg in the afternoon.

I'm new to the post and new to strattera. Recently diagnosed with adult ADD and started with 40mg for 3 days. Two hours after taking the first dose, it felt like an electrical current had been turned on. I wondered if it was the coffee, but I only had one cup and normally have 3. I suppose it could've been placebo effect, but didn't even consider the strattera until later since I was told it had to build up. I haven't had that rush since. I've been on 60mg for 10 days and have noticed I'm much more focused at work and just have an overall feeling of well being. Again, it could be the placebo effect. Either way, it's an improvement. The only drawback is I crash around 5:30 like clock work. My N.P. plans to up my dose to 80mg in another 10 days and I wonder if a split dose will help me get thru the whole day. 40mg am/40mg pm. Has anyone done this? Is this the way it's done? Does anyone else have the energy crash?
Thanks, Ava

I started on Strattera 12 days ago. I feel very sleepy after taking it. It seems to work, but I'm not sure for how long. Does anyone know the usual half-life? I've heard from anywhere from 5 to 12 hours. Also, has anyone had to wait for more than 2 weeks before really feeling an effect?
