Best Mood Stabilizer?

Posted by jodie on February 6, 2003, at 1:00:14

Calling my pdoc tomorrow, I think I may be put on a mood stabilizer. Any good ones that don't cause weight gain that I can suggest to my pdoc?

Topamax didn't cause weight gain for me...in fact
some weight loss and loss of appetite. Lamictal isn't
supposed to cause weight gain and is a good mood stabilizer,
and from what I hear, Trileptal isn't supposed to cause weight
gain.

JODIE< GO TO BED!!!!!!!!...lol

I agree with all three listed by ROO, But I'll add a bit (Hell, she won't mind...lol)

Lithium and depakote are now "the gold standards", but weight gain is often associated with them.

Don't let a doc put you on Neurontin---tell him we at PB all agree that it is usually not efective.

Lamictol is often used for bp's with prominent depressives syptoms.

Triliptal for those with mixed anxiety.

Be honest with doc, though. While Toprimax is effective, and can lead to some weight loss, if you have or have had an eating disorder this can be a bad choice!! I am just a sort of a "lean" runner and cycler and doc thougt it was not the best for me b/c I might eventually blow away...lol

Good luck,

~Tony

Tony,

Thank you for the advice!!!

I don't, or never had an eating disorder, and I am at my ideal weight now. My problem is, I want to keep it that way. Usually when weight gain is a side effect of a med, I'll gain about 10 lbs. fast. So I try to stay away from any that do. I took Depakote for a short while, besides hair falling out (no bald spots or anything, just clogging my shower drain, and cleaning my brush often), I gained 10 pounds in 2 weeks. I actually had to work out to lose it. :-)

Work out...thats something I need to do more often. Hey, I watch TV, my eyes are getting a workout, the remote is making my fingers strong...does that count??? LOL

Interesting... I had never heard about mood stabilizers until yesterday, when my doctor (who put me on Tofranil after bad experiences with Paxil and Wellbutrin) said I might need one of those after my depression is totally under control. What exactly do they do, and how do they differ from AD's? Should they be taken together with the regular AD or alone?

thanks,
Ric

Ric,

A mood stabilizer is a medication to stabilize your mood. It is commonly used for people who have bipolar disorder (manic-depression). People who are bipolar have problems with hypomania, mania, and depression. Some describe it as an emotional roller coaster.

AD's help to elevate your mood, get rid of depression. Mood stabilizers keep a person kind of "stable" so there are no severe ups and downs. Actually if one is bipolar, an AD alone can trigger mania.

Someone else may be able to describe what a mood stabilizer is better than me. Sorry if this wasn't much help.
