Going on an MAOI

Posted by Jack Smith on January 29, 2003, at 20:18:50

Well, I have made up my mind, to an MAOI. I just am scared to death about weaning off celexa and wellbutrin. I mean wellbutrin should not be a big deal but I have been on 40 mg of celexa for almost two years. . . . just not working the way it used to. Now, I have to hope that my pdoc will let me, if he doesn't I know another pdoc who almost certainly will prescribe one.

Do you have to have your Blood Pressure tested before you go on one?

Any helpful hints for the weaning off period?

Finally, Parnate or Nardil? Leaning towards Nardil because I have a strong anxiety component to my depression. Oh well, let's hope for the best.

Use any doc who will precribe it! It's worth it.
With the Celexa...I was on Zoloft for 3 years, weaned off it once -- wasn't any real probs for a month, then big withdrawal kicked in. I was on it 2nd time for around 6 months. Weaned off it in a weak (from 25mg-0mg), had a two weak break and started Nardil. Dandy as candy.

Yeah, that's a good idea. Take it an hour or two after your first dose also, to see how it affects your BP.

Do the Celexa wean over a 2 and a halk week period, I would think. I could be wrong, however.

Nardil without a doubt. Parnate is always there if you need it.

Can you take your blood pressure yourself? You don't need a doc to do it. By the way, Ace are you andyjc on depression forums?

No -- I't better to go to your Dr's office and get it done yourself. Either that or buy a BP machine, which can be expensive (for a good one).

By the way, Ace are you andyjc on depression forums?

Yeah, of course!!!! People really get around on this web! They don't like me there, I critize their beloved SSRI's. Do you post on that forum?
I want to post a letter I wrote to a DR. which presented evidence of SSRI-induced neurological damage but another poster think it might be harmful and scare people. That sort of stuff is always cool on this site. One person even told me to 'tone down my Nardil pushing'! What?! I thought this was a democracy we live in! I won't be posting much at that site anymore, I think.

Take Care, Jack.

MAOI's and Wellbutrin??????

How safe is this? The reason I ask is because I have heard that it is OK. . . . I don't want to take them both together but I was thinking that maybe when I finish taking Celexa, I can continue with the WB for another week and only wait a week between WB and Nardil--but still two weeks between ssri and Nardil.

What do people think?

I thought you were the same person, it is a little discouraging to see that the same person is pushing nardil all over the web but I continue to see that most people only have positives to say. Anyway, I am curious what they said to you over there on dep forums. I read some crazy post somewhere else on the internet that that place is just a front for some pharm companies--obviously, just paranoia but it is a little strange over there. I am totally not suprised they told you to stop pushing nardil. By the way who said something to you????? I am very curious.

I like people who "critize their beloved SSRI's".

Maybe you already know about this but here is it anyway:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=10647094&dopt=Abstract

...the return to initial values of brain 5-HT levels after repeated administration of the two 5-HT re-uptake inhibitors (Cloimipramine and Fluoxetine), consistent with the presence of brain adaptative mechanisms, with a concomitant dramatic decrease of platelet 5-HT content and...

...brain and periphery MAOI-A effect induced by moclobemide with 5-HT levels remaining elevated...

I really think this is enough evidence the SSRIs do not raise Serotonin levels in long term use.
