I have depression, OCD, and anxiety. My main drug is Celexa, but my doctor recently started me on a low dose (.25 mg) of risperdal. My sex drive seems to be down, and I even had one recent episode of impotence. I'm hoping it was an isolated incident, but that's the last thing I need. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Like antidepressants, any psychiatric drug can cause sexual problems. The antipsychotics can cause these problems, primarily in men. Sexual problems on APs are not as common as on ADs, but they do happen.
Risperdal made me partially impotent. Amisulpride was even worse. From what I can gather, the sexual problems are probably caused by increased hormone levels of prolactin caused, by the AP.
Zyprexa is the least likely to cause sexual problems. We rarely hear of anyone compaining of sexual problems with Zyprexa. It also has a better reputation and better therapeutic value all around. I take Zyprexa and have no sexual problems at all.

Risperdal raises prolactin, and this leads to impotence. Check your blood prolactin levels, if they are in the high range you're Risperdal intolerant (like me), and you'll have to switch to Zyprexa, Seroquel or Geodon.

0.5mg. My PDoc couldn't believe this, but my prolactin was way above the high bound of the norm.This is very personal. Risperdal is considered atypical, but is actually pretty much a 'typical' antipsychotic, especially considering the raise of prolactin.
The 'real' atypicals doesn't cause it. I haven't had it on any dose of Zyprexa, Seroquel or Geodon.

What are you taking these drugs for? I tried zyprexa but found it too sedating (couldnt get out of bed in the morning) and was worried that it would cause weight gain because it made me so hungry. WHat's the deal with seroquel and geodon? Did you have your prolactin levels tested once you went off risperdal? When I first started the Risperdal, it totally killed my drive for about a week. This is extremely strange for me. I also move my Wellabutrin dose to later in the day and am willing to sacrafice some sleep for sex.
It's better now, have been on the Risper for 2/5 weeks, it is working for me as a MS, but is causing some icky muscle tension and electric mouth...for lack of a better word.
i get the munchies too...care to share on your reactions?

When my anxiety truly originated is hard to say. It was, though, promptly treated. It's that now while my anxiety per see is better, I still have panic attacks occasionally and the agoraphobia reminds me of

As for the muscle tension and electric mouth, be sure to doc. The side effect profile of risp is not the greatest as you can develop a syndrome, that escapes my mind at the moment---uuumm…tartitive dyscensia ( sorry for spelling), but is an issue when using even atypical anti-pschs you don’t want to deal with.
Oh, who is ever willing to "sacrifice some sleep for sex"...lol

Where have you gone? Were you taking an SSRI with the risperdal? (Since ssris can raise prolactin, I was thinking that the combination might have a synergistic effect.) In any case, I wanted to talk to you about your experiences with zyprexa, seroquel, and geodon.

I have been taking effexor which is not working &
will begin taking celexa and risperdal. I'd like to know what other side effects you have experienced besides sexual.I'd like to prepare myself this time around.

I have been on celexa and risperdal (60 mg and 1.5 mg respectively) and it definitely killed my sex drive (female). I still had sex but I wasn't in the mood ever (it's not like it was torture- I just didn't get aroused like I normally do. Emotionally, I still wanted to have sex, but I had no need for it physically). I'm in the process of switching to geodon and it's not going very well- I am incredibly anxious and feel ill- but I'll keep you posted if you like. I'm only going to give it until this Friday (2 weeks total).

About a week after I started it, I got incredibly nauseous for a few days. I'm not sure it had anything to do with the risperdal, but I stopped taking it. When I felt better, I tried seroquel instead because of the sexual side effects. It's very sedating and I'm still obsessive, but I started less than a week ago, so who knows.

Celexa can kill sex drive too. But I assume it got worse when you added the risperdal? Did it work for the OCD? DId you gain weight?

yes- It worked incredibly well on the obsessions but I'm the one that gained 60 pounds which is why I'm trying geodon right now. Don't think I'm going to continue with the geodon- it is making me feel incredibly ill. So my next trial will be seroquel.

It's official- I'm off the geodon as of tonight. it made my obsessions and anxiety much, much worse and on top of that I felt like I had the flu and couldn't eat a thing. 10 days of that misery was more than enough! I will give my body a few weeks to rest and then will try seroquel. Please keep me posted on how it goes for you, yeltom.
