Can anything besides benzos be taken with MAOI's

Posted by Lawrence S. on January 22, 2003, at 13:37:01

As I am discontinuing my meds in preparation for taking nardil I wonder if there is anything (besides AP's and mood stabilizers) that would help me with the anxiety deppresion I likely will encounter. Like maybe, SAM-e, Trazadone or anything anyone knows of that will not interact with maoi's that could be beneficial during this time. Advice greatly appreciated.

I have been on Nardil for 3weeks now (1/2 week at 60mg), and it hasn't really kicked in yet. For SP, I also take 2mg Klonopin a day.

Provigil is a stimulating drug used to treat narcolepsy. I have read that Provigil can also improve mood, memory, and concentration in users and increase sociability.

Some people responded to me earlier that they were taking Provigil with MAOIs. My pdoc is currently investigating whether Provigil is generally safe to take with MAOIs (he's asking other doctors who use MAOIs more). I'm seeing him tomorrow and I'll let you know what he says.

I read in a previous post that you said that you felt like nardil "cured" your anxiety and depression--just wondering why you would have to take those things with nardil (I can understand the benzos, and sleeping aids, just not the mood stabilizers and ad's). I am just curious. Are you BP? I am not so I guess I wouldn't need a mood stabilizer.

I have epilepsy (left frontal lobe dysrhythmia)...At times I have been on Neurontin, topamax, zonegran, Klonopin and tegretol.

I have tried trazadone and sonata for occational insomnia

xanax was for specific stiuation anxiety (public speaking), but I found Inderal works the best for that.

Just thought I'd mention, it might take some time yet. It took 6 weeks for me -- 4 of those at 60mg. I have taken 90mg just short of one dose now -- the 90mg might take 3/4 weeks to kick in.

Be patient! Not too long to go!

Correction: The 90mg has been taken ONE DOSE SHORT OF A WEEK TODAY.

***Disclaimer*** I do not advise anyone try this combo!

Strange, but some of the "Nardil" and "MAOIs" experts are alittle more cavalier about what can be mixed in with MAOIs. I had a consult with the nardil "God" Dr. Fredrick Quikten from Columbia. He has been involved in much of the research involved with nardil and other MAOIs (he is all over Pub Med). He actually recommended I add Dexadrine to my medication regimen to see if it would relieve the afternoon sedation and sex dysfunction. I couldn't believe it ... but he said he routined did this without a single episode of hypertensive crisis.

**** Disclaimer ***** No one should do this without close monitoring by their doctor

Second .... as Ace has mentioned ... nardil alway took alittle longer to take hold as opposed to other antidepressants. I have assumed this is because the nardil must saturate the gut MAO enzymes first before they can go up to the brain and start inhibiting the brain MAO enzymes. Nardil routinely took 1 to 2 weeks longer than standard antidepressants to take effect.

Jumpy -- can you tell me about this Quitken fellow. Spike 4848 called him the 'Godfather of Nardil" and you call him "the nardil "God"'

If he has anything to do with the production/promotion of Nardil I'll send him a big kiss!

I saw Dr Frederick Quikten about 3 years ago to as a single consult to discuss ways to relieve the side effects of nardil. He charge me $350 ... which might have been a slight discount compare to his normal rate. He was involved in many of the studies with nardil in the 70's and 80's .. and discovered that nardil was unique .. extremely potent for depression and anxiety. This is what he told me, "Nardil works for 90% of patients who take it, unforunately 75% of those people stop it due to side effects." He doesn't use it as much now, I think due to the "Libby Zion" case that happened here in NYC. But he does say it is extremely potent.

My experience agree with him, nardil is super effective, but lots of side effects.

Jack,
I have'nt taken those other things with nardil. I'm not on nardil yet, I'm washing out to go on it and am looking for something to help me throught the washout of the other inept meds. I had to stop nardil a couple years back because of hernia surgery and have'nt gone back on it. As for being bipolar, maybe, but not severe. It depends on what pdoc I get diagnosed by.

Libby Zion was a patient taking nardil and was given demerol once at a New York Hospital Emergency room. She eventually died (Pulmonary hemorrhage from hypertension??). She also took cocaine, so it is unclear whether she died from an interaction of nardil with demerol or cocaine.

Her parents sued the physicians and won. What came out of the case was that NY doctors in training had the numbers of hours they could work reduced. The other thing that occurred after the Libby Zion case was that most NYC doctors became reluctant to prescribe MAOIs. Very unforunate for the thousands of patients that now suffer and may have a good response to an MAOI (especially since many believe it was Libby's cocaine habit which cause the interaction and eventual death!)

I have been on and off nardil for 6 years at 60mgs/day. I stop because of the 30lbs weight gain, memory difficulties, insomnia and sexual dysfunction .... then after 2 or 3 med trial failures, I crawl back to nardil.

I've been on Nardil for 17 years, going off of it a number of times to try other meds, like when prozac first came out, and others. Always had to go back on it. The risk of adverse reactions is high, and being very careful about what you eat and what otc meds you take, as well as other rx meds is crucial. I've had mild problems occasionally, but one time it interacted with a drug I'd just been prescribed and I went into a hypertensive crisis and it was a trip to the ER for support. **I'd also been given a shot of Demerol while in the hospital, and the residents did know i was taking nardil, and I coded, but was revived. Demerol in particular has been known to interact and cause death not just a few times.
I have been on meds that warn against use with Nardil, and the doctor monitored more closely.
It seems to be individual in how one person may respond to Nardil with other meds.
