Abilify is it a cure for SZ.

Posted by ozzie on December 25, 2002, at 18:12:28

I am diagnosed paranoid Schizophrenic. I am wondering if Abilify is possible cure for this condition. IF any one is taking Abilify, please response with your reaction so far.

Thanks.

There is no cure for schizophrenia.

Abilify can treat SZ. I took it for 2 weeks, not for SZ.

As there is no 'cure' for bipolar disorder and recurrent major depression.

However, both they can all be treated successfully. Abilify (aripiprazole) was developed as a neuroleptic antipsychotic and is indicated specifically for schizophrenia. For now, any other use is considered 'off-label'.

My daughter was recently started on Abilify. She seems to react the same as with Risperdal. She still hears the voices at least once a day and has severe paranoia. For her, it has not had anywhere near the results expected.

Has she tried Zyprexa, Geodon, or Seroquel? If those fail there's still Clozaril, which is stronger.

I was put on a very high dose of Risperdal for 6weeks and it did absolutely nothing for my delusions, ideas of reference. Now I'm on Geodon and it works magically.

She has been on Seroquel, Zyprexa, Risperdal, Geodon, and now Abilify. She stayed on Geodon to the maximum dose of 80 mg twice daily which is unusual in an adult, much less a child. She just turned 12 on Christmas Eve. The Geodon caused tardive dyskinesia. She was first hospitalized in April 2002 and has already gone through all of these meds. She just got out of the hospital again the week before Christmas and the symptoms are already back. We wish there was something that would give her back a somewhat normal life. She was a straight A student and the school will not even allow her in the building this year.

Abilify has worked wonders for me. I have schizoaffective disorder and I am now on 15 mg of Abilify. The medication has taken away the horrible fog, the nightmare of delusions and hallucinations.

How long did it take for it to work? I've been on 10mg for 3 weeks and I see very little improvement. I also have schizoaffective disorder. My pdoc say it might take up to a month for it to work. I asked for an increase in dose, but for 3 months I've had severe headaches and he doesn't want to many drugs to interfere with the MRI that I'm having Monday. I'm just so frustrated becasue I can't function well and I'm very depressed to the point of almost being suicidal. I tried Geodon, which worked great except it caused to many axities in my and I was jumpy all the time, but thinking clearly. I was really bummed. I hope this new drug works for I'm very desperate.

It took about ten days for the abilify to work. I started on 10 mg and then went up to fifteen after several days. Please don't feel down. Perhaps you just need to give it a chance as per the above post. Remember that medications affect those taking them in different time frames.

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter. It's heartbreaking. Onset at age 11 is so rare. The onset of my schizophrenia occured at 19. I'm very lucky to take an antipsychotic that leaves me with no active symptoms or side-effects.

Have you considered giving your daughter Clozaril (Clozapine)? It has a horrible side-effects profile but it's also the most effective atypical there is.

If you want more information there is PubMed online. You can search the abstracts of the publishings of most medical journals. Many studies have been done on Clozapine and childhood onset schizophrenia. The link is http://www.ncbi.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi

Hope that helps...

Colleen,

How are you doing on Abilify, any improvement? I hope the MRI results were OK.

Greg --

It's so nice of you to check in. I have to admit I haven't been replying to this board lately due to being busy and I'm also very socially shy.

My pdoc increased my dose to 15mg of Abilify, which worked. It got rid of the parinoia thoughts and voices. For the headaches, I still get them, but my MRI came out OK so I was very glad. I'm seeing a Neurologist tomorrow. I do have to say the headaches aren't as bad, but that could be becuase my pdoc gave me a prescription of Vicodin. So I'm doing much better and functioning, able to join the family activities and going to work. I'm not feeling desperate. It is interesting that a low dose of Vicodin really help my moods. My pdoc said that he has read that this is true and if I keep the dose constant and not raise it and it is working then I should take it. This really surprised me. Anyway -- the Abilify is working thank God.

Thanks for asking -- very nice of you.

Colleen,

I'm glad that things are working out OK. With all of the medication problems reported here, it is always nice to hear about the successes!
