Fish oil dose?

Posted by Noa on January 6, 2003, at 18:37:19

I just took my first 1000 mg caplet of omega-3. I think the pharmacist recomended at between 3000-6000 for depression, but I'd like to know what others have learned. Can anyone point me to a reference on recommended dose for depression? thanks.

Andrew Stoll, M.D. has done a lot of research on Omega-3 FA's. You might want to look for his book, "The Omega-3 Connection." I think he's at Harvard.

For depression a dose of 1g daily of EPA,one of the two main components of omega-3 would be a reasonable dose.Higher doses in depression do not seem to be more effective in a small short survey reported recently. However individual response to omega-3 is quite variable and a higher dose may be worth trying after a few weeks on the lower dose.It is usual to use standard anti-depressant medication at the same time,at least for some time.

Thanks, Henry. As you may see in a later thread, I cited another of your posts and a link you had provided.

The Costco is really inexpensive--wow. Unfortunately, Costco is not convenient for me. Oh well.

I am taking a similar pill, though. It is a store brand of an independent pharmacy I like. Same thing--1000mg pills, and I would need about 5 of them to get 1 gm of EPA. There is a little "essence" of fish and a couple of burps, but not much. The pills are large, it's true, but they are soft and easy to swallow (unlike my multivitamin pill which is kind of a challenge to swallow--it even has angular edges, which on a big pill, is puzzling). I broke my vegetarian rules by using the gelatin capsules, though. (I do eat fish, though). But this might be a good reason to go for the liquid oil. My pharmacy does carry the lemon-flavored one, which the pharmacist recommended over the store brand pills because of the pleasanter taste and because it packs in more EPA per serving.

Is it my imagination, or can a week on fish oil start to show in slightly improved mood?

This is the end of the thread.
