I know this should go on the psych-social board...but just some comments in passing. With Social Phobia...in time, very, very gently, give yourself a little nudge with some help, of course.

But, I will say, I experienced some of the worst social phobia on my life when I was on a combination of *just* Effexor and Wellbutrin. These meds REVED my psyche up so much, I was even too freaked out to set foot outside my bedroom. I was also very angry, and very anxious. These where the couple of meds that Paula Yates (correct name?) I believe was on only at once. I've read much that theses meds (when just used together) can be way too activating, and cause too much anxiety, and hence the 'social phobia'. It's like you are both scared and hate the world on these.

I have found, through some very casual 'meta-analysis' and my own experience, if you will, that lower doses of each of these meds individually, as well as lower dose tricyclics, and especially low dose (like just a few miligrams) of Prozac and Zoloft WITH a benzodiazepine seem to be the best shot at targeting social phobia. They also seem to work well for most depressive and anxiety disorders

I hope that is helpful for somebody....

Best,
Jay

I'm starting Nardil on January 3rd. Hopefully that will make me more social. Currently I have only a couple friends that I don't get along well with. I'm a 20yo who goes to college. I take Klonopin and Geodon; they help a lot. I live at home and have no girlfriend. I am lonely and envious of my much more sociable younger brother. I never go to parties because they make me uncomfortable.

I think once I find the right med combination I should do much better. I think the Nardil will help. I'm praying it does. I'll probably add Provigil in February to counter the lethargy of the Klonopin. If meds can't change me then I'll do talk therapy.

I think the best answer to your question is that although social phobia will probably never leave you completely, it is realistic to expect that you will be able to function well enough in life to do whatever you want and enjoy happiness just the same.

Recovery is hard work. It goes without say that medication will be necessary, at least in the short term, but being involved with CBT is a critical adjunct. Meds + therapy is the most potent combination out there, especially for SP. Seek out the best specialists you can afford, and follow their advice. It will be worth it in the end. The best doctors out there really do know what they are doing, but make sure your doctor is one of them. If you are anywhere near NYC I would highly recommend Michael R. Liebowitz (pdoc) and Carla Daichman (CBT therapist). Both are part of Klein, Liebowitz Psychiatric Associates. Dr. Liebowitz and Carla Daichman are "the" people when it comes to social phobia. Good luck, and don't be too hard on yourself. It's a long road, but it's worth it in the end. Hang in there!

I strongly belive there are different brands or types of sp. these will respond in somewhat different ways, and exibit somewhat different fears.

ya life pretty much sucks every day. I have friends who like me although I am NEVER able to really talk to them at all. this is frustrating as hell. I consider myself a resonably intelligent thoughful guy, but I cant talk to anyone, and am extremely unmotivated to do anything, so it goes to waste. for me stimulants cause a half hour of power then I feel worse. i strongly feel my problem is dopamine related, but I dont take any meds right now because I have wait for a p doc. like Jon said, for some of us the negative self talk can be horrible, but you really shouldnt let it get to you. its not your fault. and no that dumb thing you said a week ago will not kill you (sorry talking to myself here:) just dream of what you want to do when its all over.

Hi Tepiaca,

It's my understanding that the only additional vitamins beneficial to fish oil supplementation are C & E, so you might want to try a brand without all the extras. As I'm not an expert, that's just my opinion. Anyhow, I get the impression from what you wrote that you have a history of making changes to your med "cocktail" relatively rapidly (as many of us do). It's very important to give a given "cocktail" a chance without rocking the boat. Not doing so is simply lost time because you proved nothing more than how tolerable a given drug is. It's tempting to make changes, especially if you get an initial high. That can be misleading. My friendly advice is to find a good pdoc, and follow his instructions. You should work with your doctor, but let him steer the ship. Achieving some semblance of "well" is a rocky road to travel, but in the end, medication, therapy (CBT), and listening to those in charge of your care will save you from yourself. Hang in there!

Jon

Diagnosed with SA about 5 years ago and medication DOES work. Zoloft worked, and klonopin. Both have made a tremedous difference in my life. not married, I do go out when I'm not suffering from depression (also BPAD II). I do have friends.
