Ross: I've been on Nardil (or Marplan) since l984.
It worked like a charm from the beginning, except for insomnia, which went away when I lowered the dose. At one point, I quit Nardil to try some other meds (which did not work) and had the inability to have orgasms when I started back up on Nardil. That went away within 3 months or so.
In general, MAOIs have been good meds for me.
I originally tried tricyclics (this was in l982)
but their sedative side effects were horrible.
My doctor wouldn't give me MAOIs (she was a Neandertal), but when I found an experienced psychiatrist, I was given that drug right away.
The only problem I have had with Nardil is that,
unfortunately, it stopped working after I was on it for 11 years. Now I am taking a whole combination of meds, including Nardil which I think continues to help me somewhat, just not nearly enough.

Hi Vanessa,

I'm assuming you are female by your name and was wondering if weight gain was ever an issue with you as far as side effects. What are the side effects for you with Nardil? I tried Marplan once and found it very sedating. I've tried alsmost every SSRI with only minor success, so my next choice will be Nardil. Thanks for any input you have.

Angell: I have tried all 3 MAOIs and didn't have any side effects with any of them (except for
initial insomnia which went away with time). I ended up on Marplan, then Nardil. How long did you take the Marplan (which made you sedated)? Sometimes initial side effects go away over time or are even different at different times: I tried Parnate in l984 and it sedated me into a stupor.I tried it again in l996 -- and it energized me. As for weight gain -- it didn't cause any.

Hi Vanessa,

I'll be starting Nardil in a couple of days. I'm curious how closely you follow the MAOI diet. How much has that impacted your life?

Thanks,
Jon

Jon: The MAOI diet is not as rigid as it used to be (say my doctors). I eat mild cheeses, drink mild beers, eat chocolate. There are certain things I never touch: aged cheeses, aged beers,
red wine, decongestants and more. Your doctor can advise. I have never had a MAOI crisis because
of what I ate and I have been on MAOIs since l983. As far as how much the diet has impacted my life -- very little. But then, I would eat dirt if it relieved my depression, which can be very severe.

I take decongestants (pseudoephedrine, etc.) with Nardil...I think that it depends on the person, for some people it takes a lot of tyramine, or another pressor amine to illicit a response...much like the serotonin syndrome reaction, where some people can experience symptoms from one 20mg dose of prozac, while others can combine high doses of Effexor and SSRi's with no problems at all.

I've been on Nardil for over 2 months now. My dose has just been upped again. I've tryed pretty much every other type of antidepressant, over 10, and most of them kicked the crap out of me no matter how long I took them, with no possitive results. Nardil has had fewer side effects, and I do feel different, but I am still lathargic and depressed. Maybe it will get better but it's hard to have hope. My depression is the cause of constant emotional, and inconsistant childhood abuse both at home and school. I have been in some form of therapy or analasis since I was five years old. I am 28 now and for the last few years the depression has been worse than ever. I haven't had a girlfriend in over a decade, and all I ever recive is rejection because of my lack of social skills. I now live on SSI because no one will hire me. In the end without intamacy or family support drugs and therapy may just be useless. People for whom antidepressants work always say things like: "I can feel joy again." The problem is I've never felt it in the first place, I had the capacity to, but my joy was always met with anger, judgement, and violence. Now I have lethargy so bad I can hardly do anything.

Hi Blah.. I was wondering how you were doing. It sounds as though Nardil may be more effective than the other AD's you were taking previously. I hope you get less depressed and have more energy on it- be sure to keep us informed.

I stopped taking Nardil. All it did was dull my mind the same way it dulled my penis, and left me with just emptieness. I've done Research, and am going to my pdoc today with it. I'm telling her that it is either a STRONG benzo (not klonopin), or even more nessesary an opiate analgisic (like buprenorphine which has done well in studies:
http://balder.prohosting.com/~adhpage/bupe.html

My therapist agrees with this aproch. Obviously, conventional drugs DO NOT WORK FOR ME, and both my pdoc and my therapist dought ECT would considering my symtems, and as many on this board have pointed out from personal expirience ECT is hardly "safe." My main problem is emotional and somatic pain, and has been as long as I can remember. The only solution now is a pain reliever. My pdoc is warry of drugs that carry "dependance" even though I am obviously a candidate, and have never had a drug problem (I didn't do anything till I was 24 including alcohol and cigarets, and all I do now is have the OCCASIONAL joint. I have never done cocain or heroin, and yet she still treats me like a junkie). Also, lets be honest: ssris and snris carry dependence too. I had much more withdrawl from ADs than from stimulants (marajiuana has no withdrawl at all). If my pdoc is not willing to take a chance with harder drugs I will either get a new pdoc or just get rx opiates through an internet site. I've just F---in' had it with this crap.
