Diazepam with Valerian

Posted by bluedog on December 3, 2002, at 10:30:41

I asked this question in the middle of another thread above and I fear it may have been overlooked in that thread.

My question related to the safety of taking Valerian Root with Diazepam? In my post I wrote the following:

"Is it safe to use Valerian together with a benzo?
Every day I take 2.5mg of Diazepam (half a tablet) at night and another 2.5mg in the morning. However if I'm really "wound up" I sometimes double my nightly dose to 5mg (one whole tablet).
I want to know whether it is safe on these nights, rather than increasing my Diazepam dose, to instead take a Valerian capsule with my regular Diazepam dose?"

I'm having one of those days where I will probably need a whole tablet to sleep properly tonight. I am just about to take my nightly dose and am very keen to try valerian instead of taking the increased dose. But I won't do this if there are any known adverse interactions between the two substances. (in other words I don't want to visit my local emergency room due to some horrible reaction)

As always I really appreciate any knowledge on this question.

thankyou for any responses

I have combined the two before, safely.
I believe Valerian has some effect on
Gaba as well. Just make sure you get
some kind of idea as to how powerful the
Valerien is. For me, I figured six valerien
was about the same as 0.5 mg lorazepam
mind you, these were small valerien caps.

I once combined a high does of Benadril with Valerian and became wildly suicidal.

Valerian is strong stuff, and I would not combine it.

I don't mean to be contrary, but I would strongly suspect the Benedryl adding more to that problem in the combination.

I would like to thank all the above posters for their input.

I would just like to say I tried the Valerian/Diazepam combination last night (This was before I had read Arthur's post), and I would like to report that the combination worked absolutely BRILLIANTLY.

I had the most restful sleep I have had in a very long time. What absolute bliss!!!! In fact the sleep was more restful than I've ever had taking either the Diazepam or the Valerian individually. Also I had none of the morning grogginess that I usually get when I take the increased Diazepam dose.

The combination I took last night was as follows:

1) Diazepam - 2.5mg

2) Valerian complex (1 high potency capsule) containing the following ingredients:

Valerian Root - 2500mg (2.5g)
Passion flower herb top - 100mg
Skullcap dry herb - 100mg
Chamomile dry flower extract - 100mg
Vit B1 (Thiamine Nitrate) - 5mg
Nicotinamide - 15mg
Vit B6 (Pyridoxine Hydrochloride - 10mg
Zinc Sulfate monohydrate - 13.8mg
(equiv. elemental zinc 5mg)

The only question I still have is whether anyone else has experienced the side effects that Arthur experienced? Arthur, did you experience the problems you described after just one dose or was it after a longer period of use?

thankyou

Valerian - good over the long term

I believe some studies suggested that valerian was best used over a long time. They said it worked the best this way.

I am not sure.
