Viagra - anyone had any luck with it?

Posted by Joanie on November 19, 2002, at 11:41:10

Husband having a little problem getting "there" lately. Sex life isn't the same as it once was. My first thought is, "it's me!" He assures me it's not me, it's him. Question - is there any type of vitamin that might help? Or, we thought about trying viagra, but will he have good sex when using it, or will he be like, a machine? What's it like? Any advice would be helpful. Oh,and he does smoke a little/lot pot. I told him that was probably the problem, that and he's no longer 20. He's 41. Thanks for any advice.

Joanie,

I don't have any personal experience with Viagra, but the people I've talked to who it works for love it. One of my former pdocs prescribed it for every aspect of sexual dysfunction. Pot can't help and could be contributing to the problem. Physically, good sex has a lot to do with blood flow. If he doesn't already, he could try focusing more on how he can affect you and less on his performance. There are herbs that you could try as an alternative like ginkgo biloba and yohimbe. Yohimbe probably works the best out of the herbs, but it is not without risk and side-effects and you should ask your doc before purchasing it. Ginkgo biloba is pretty safe (as far as I know), but I believe any herb should be added with your docs OK. Ginkgo will take 4 weeks or so to have an effect, yohimbe should work right away. A couple of other natural things he could eat to possibly help him get "there" are fortified breads and cereals high in niacin. Niacin is essential for secreting histaimine which triggers sneezes and orgasms. There is also chocolate which contains stimulants that make your skin very sensitive to touch, and of course, it contains small amounts of the drug our bodies release when we fall in love.

Good Luck,
Jon

I found viagra sort-of worked, but gave me a blocked up nose (difficult to breath while kissing) and headache. Uprima sort-of worked and there were no side effects. Caverject by injection really did work but the injection really hurt, caused bruising and gave groin pain afterwards. Only Caverject gives an erection whether you want one or not, so you might be more machine-like.

The big snag for me, and one that's never mentioned in the ads, is the crippling cost.

Thanks for all that good info. We'll try some of the things you mentioned, including ginkgo biloba or yohimbe. Thanks again!

I hate to be negative, but my experience is that "herbal" or "natural" generally mean "ineffective"

I agree with this, and just because something is "natural" doesn't mean it's safe. In my experience, though, yohimbe was very effective for every aspect of sexual function. I didn't like the side-effects, and most people wouldn't advise taking it. Its effect was definitely a lot of fun, though :)

Joanie,

I would recommend Yohimbe Fuel by Twinlabs, but I must caution you that this is a serious herb with some serious risks. I've pasted the warning label below:

"Warning:
This product contains yohimbe bark extract which contains yohimbine. Do not use this product if you are at risk or are being treated for high blood pressure, heart, kidney, thyroid or psychiatric disease, anxiety, depression, seizure disorder or stroke. Consult your health care professional before use if you are taking antidepressants, MAO inhibitor or any other prescription drug. Not for use in children, geriatric patients or females. Discontinue use and consult your health care professional if dizziness, sleeplessness, tremor, nervousness, headache or heart palpitations occur. Not intended for use by persons under the age of 18, keep out of reach of children."

The side-effects that I experienced were frequent urination (I believe it's a diuretic), nervousness, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, and insomnia. Unfortunately, its effect as a stimulant outlasts its "other" effects. So he may have difficulty sleeping afterwards. In any case, please be sure yohimbe won't put him at risk before taking it. He'll know when it kicks in, or atleast I did :)

Be careful and have fun,
Jon

p.s. I don't mean to scare you. Many people take yohimbe without a problem, but please make the decision to try it knowing that many countries including the US have classified it as an unsafe herb. You may wish to search the internet to find out more about it.

Thanks for that invaluable information. Sounds like alot to consider. Maybe a person needs to be literally dead before taking it with all those cautions! Geeze. The only medication he takes is something for his stomach, not nexium, but something like it. Do you know if that would be a problem?

Not as far as I know, but you should ask your doctor or pharmacist any questions you have. It's my understanding that the biggest concern is for people with high blood pressure, etc.
