Moderate Marijuana use with SSRI's...

Posted by charly on November 9, 2002, at 15:26:42

Hi,

I would like any information/articles pertaining to the concommitant use of moderate amounts of
Marijuana on someone who is on an SSRI. Are there any hard data concluding that Marijuana has deterious effects on pts who have affective disorders?
My pysch. thinks that in moderate amounts, in stable pts., one glass of wine/day or occasional consumption of marijuana is ok for many pts.
What's the opinion/experiences here?
Regards,
charly

I've been smoking weed pretty much daily for the past 13 years. I've been on Celexa, Paxil, Effexor, Clonazepam, Trazadone, and Depakote. Of course, once I started medication, I slowed down my intake of marijuana quite a bit but I've never had one problem with smoking weed while on meds.

Put it this way, if you never got overly depressed/suffered panic attacks before you started taking the SSRI while smoking weed, then you should not experience that now.

Alcohol, however, is a different story altogether for me. Used to be able to drink quite a bit, now if I have any more than 2 drinks while on the meds I start to get really funny. Like scary high. However, there are lots of people that seem to be able to drink moderate amounts while on any of these drugs.

I'd say test it for yourself but don't overdo it. If either the marijuana/alcohol creates an adverse reaction to the medication that you're taking, then just don't do it again.

ok i am and have been a heavy marijuana user for several years. i dont know the potency of the weed u smoke but i smoke pretty good quality chronic from here in california. i have some experience that might help you. ive been on several anti depressants while smoking weed regularly such as paxil, celexa, wellbutrin, and remeron. smoking weed while on paxil, celexa, and wellbutrin was ok and there were no negative effects. actually weed helped with the anxiety i got from taking those anti depressants. i tend to get real anxious and uneasy when i take those meds. however, if u ever take remeron, u gotta watch out for mixing it with weed. i dont know about others, but mixing chronic with remeron just messed me up like no drug i ever tried. it got me more messed up than E. i dont know if this is a good thing or bad thing for you, and to be honest, i dont know where i would put it too. i kind of enjoyed this new high, but sometimes it got a bit out of control. i would be so messed up i couldnt function normally. the intensity was too much for me. before, i would love to drive while being high, enjoying the sunny weather, but while i was on remeron, i realized driving high was close to impossible. to this day i still have trouble driving high. my couple attempts to drive freeway while on the combo resulted in 2 near panic attacks. so basically all im saying is, if u ever go on remeron, take precaution when smoking out cuz ur gonna feel something different. u might like it, u might not.

Francisco,

I've only tried Remeron once and I wasn't consuming any weed. I found the Remeron highly (no pun attended) sedating, even throughout the next day. I've been to Amsterdam twice and love weed. Now I consume good to very good quality Krip, which is mostly Indica and some Haze (Sativa). I've found that while I enjoy the high, I pay for it the next several days in terms of feeling sluggish and tired. You gave me a good idea, one that I can ask my doc; try Wellbutrin and the weed (which he knows I do). In the past, Wellbutrin either alone or in combination w/SSRI was like drinking 5 cups of Turkish coffee or strong Expresso. Perhaps the weed will allow me to take the Wellbutrin augmentation to offset sexual side effects of Lexapro.
Francisco, thanks for sharing.
Peace,
charly
