caregiver concerns

Posted by laurie66 on November 10, 2002, at 15:40:59

Hi, this is my first post, I'm not the patient, my husband of 14 years is.

He had a complete meltdown 2 and a half years ago, diagnosis:
Panic disorder
major depressive disorder
adjustment disorder
fallout is agoraphobia and OCD

They recently put him on risperdal - Sept 11 1mg
and adjusted last tuesday to 2 mg with benztropine to help with the side effects. His regular meds are: Paxil 40mg, Effexor 375mg, Ativan and Diazepam when needed to take the "edge" off. He is also on eltroxcin.

My question - the side effects of the side effect fixer is quite scary, he can't hold a conversation or changes topic mid sentence. Confusion is really bad with this one.... how long before the side effects disapate?

any input would be helpful,

thanks
laurie

Hi Laurie,

I am sorry your husband is having a difficult time.

First of all, why is he on Risperdal--does he have any psychotic symptoms or mania?

I also take benztropine [Cogentin] to treat extrapyrimidal symptoms, such as muscle stiffness. I only take 2mg/day and do not have any side effects from it. Not being able to hold a conversation sounds like a very serious side effect. I think you (or he) should talk to his doctor about it. If Risperdal causes side effects at only 2mg/day, perhaps a trial of another antipsychotic agent would be in order.

I hope this helps.

thanks for your input xj, he was put on risperdal for a few things he was experiencing, I am not sure which category they fall under, I find that there are so many terms and diagnosis. You may be able to tell me more, he was arguing with himself (voice in his head, but his own voice) what was worrying me was a little game he started in the backyard, sneaking on hands and knees with a flashlight, kind of a war game without the war. He is also on 2mg a day, I haven't had this much difficulty with him since a reaction to an MAOI (think that is right - seems he has had a lot of different meds over a short time)

His doc also seem to think it may help with his agitation (he came close to tossing one of my children across the room)
