Lamictal Sleep - the continued saga

Posted by jrbecker on September 16, 2002, at 8:06:45

A lot of posters on the board have already mentioned their struggle at first with Lamictal and getting a good night's rest. I'm currrently four days into starting treatment, at 50 mg per day, talking half in am and half in pm.

Some of you have mentioned that it will get easier as you tirate up, but a lot of you seem to add on klonapin or another sleep agent as the main way to get relief. As adding another drug to the regimen is not my first option, I'm wondering if there is going to be any signiifcant relief to restful sleep in sight down the road. And secondly, has anybody found that talking all of the dose in the AM is a viable option. I'm assuming this strategy is going to be just as disagreeable since as I tirate up, the huge dosage I would have to take all at once in the AM would cause a fairly high somnolescent effect.

Any thoughts?

When I used to take Lamictal, I took the full dose
in the morning. but it didn't help with the sleep.
It sucks b/c lamictal is a GREAT drug--it really helped
me, but I couldn't sleep at all on it, it was just awful.
I hope you find a way...

I split my doses, 50 in the am and 50 in the pm. I haven't been able to sleep without a sleep med while on it. You might try taking it all in the morning or taking your evening dose at earlier in the evening.

If taking your whole dose in the morning doesn't work, you might check with your doc about taking it every other day. I haven't tried this and at 200mg am just starting to have sleep issues, but when I miss a day I don't plummet so every other might work.

Failing that, if you don't want to get involved with prescription sleep meds, try an antihistamine. Dramamine works as well for me as benzos anyway. Benedryl is also an option.
