Vacuum-Head: A new SE.

Posted by Phil on September 15, 2002, at 16:31:14

I'm taking a big combo. Wellbutrin, Adderall, Clonazepan and Lexapro(good so far). But now and prior to this with Celexa and other drugs, if I move my head to the side I hear, or experience kind of a whooshing sound(not empty)in my brain. It isn't as pronounced as head shocks, way more suble. Subtle enough that I haven't brought it up till now. Also, even in person, it's hard to explain. Sometimes it can be a couple of quick pressured feelings, seemingly in my brain, that I can physically notice.
Almost like pressure in the ears while flying but not that uncomfotable and no popping type thing to make it stop.
Maybe I'm getting head rushes because of high dose Wellbutrin and Adderall. Any ideas? BS will work. I think my BP is normal.

I've felt what I think you're describing after discontinuing every SSRI (& Effexor, which was basically an SSRI at the dose I was taking) I've ever taken, even Prozac. It went away on its own after a while, but I found taking a small dose of whichever I was most recently on helped get rid of 'em. I had to *chew* the Effexor granules, though, for it to work with that stuff. Yum!

I didn't really mind, 'cause the effect was -- usually, except with (can you guess?) yep, Effexor -- mild and the altered perception was even kinda fun.:) I never had the electric zap sort of withdrawal thingy lots of people describe.

How long ago did you quit taking Celexa?

Last Monday. But this isn't withdrawal stuff. It can happen day in and day out. It has to do with one of my current meds, could be the Lexapro or Celexa, who knows?
I would guess Wellbutrin could be the culprit. Any more ideas?

When I was taking Wellbutrin (alone, no other meds), one of the many side effects was a tremendous feeling of pressure in my head. It started very predictably about an hour after taking WB and lasted all day. It was definitely the WB.

I took WB for 2 months but (despite some mood improvement) discontinued it due to anxiety, dizziness, and various other side effects including the above. All of the side effects quickly disappeared when I stopped it.

I'm currently taking clonazepam and Adderall (and Neurontin) and haven't experienced anything like that with these. And, my moods are very stable, finally.

Hi,
I'm new to this forum (and AD meds) having just been diagnosed 6 weeks ago. I was about to write in with my own questions when I saw your post. I got the wooshy-ear-stuff too when I started on Aropax (downunder brand of paroxetine), mainly early morning and the evenings. I asked my psychologist about it and he had never heard of it before. I asked my doctor and she said that that type of reaction is generally related to pressure imbalances in the middle?? ear and I should try blocking my nose/mouth and blowing. It helped a little but the best help was the ear unblocking that occurred as I flew from NZ to Australia a week ago. Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Amy

Pellmell, might be onto something Phil. IF you see 20mg of escitalopram as 40mg of s+r-citalopram, and you were on 60mg of Celexa, then you may be getting a *mild* SSRI withdrawal.

Actually, my eyes skipped right over that last drug on your list, Phil...I probably wouldn't've said what I did if I'd've noticed it.

Though after what Ritch said...yeah, I think I might be on to something after all. :)

In other news, I hate it when I don't notice until much later that my pronouns aren't agreeing with each other..grr:

Actually, this is most everyday. I'm going to take my Wellbutrin SR a little differently today and see what happens. This was happening on Celexa for months.
It 'feels' like a Wellbutrin SE, hard to explain but I'll let y'all know.

Thanks everyone,

Phil

I have been taking Lexapro since 9-13-02 and I have been feeling like that! Also, it hurts my eyes to look side to side. I just assumed the "headache" (only word I could come up with for it) was because I significantly reduced my caffiene intake. I usually intake A LOT of caffiene and my doc told me to reduce because of GURD. Now, I am not sure what is causing this effect. I HAVE, however, noticed that if you put your palms on each side of your head (near temples) and push just a little, it helps. I know that sounds weird, but it helps me sometimes.

Wellbutrin was causing that with me. Reduced my dose with docs okay and it's gone.

Well, today was my fifth day on Lexapro, and I noticed that the "vacuum" effect wasn't nearly as bad. I did have some caffeine today, so maybe I was having caffeine withdrawal. I am beginning to wonder if maybe the caffeine is a good thing for me right now. I can't handle the vacuum effect or the side-vision pain. I'm going to continue with small amounts of caffeine each day, not too much though.
