I need advice about celexa

Posted by TAMYRA on August 21, 2002, at 13:45:44

HI, I am new to celexa, but not new to depression, anxiety and panic. I took impramine(tofranil), for 10 years and it worked pretty good but alot of side effects. after i had my son 6 years ago the doctors decided that tofranil was such a old and outdated ad, they wanted me to try the new ssri's. I just cant really find one yet thats right for me. i"ve tryed prozac and effexor, they were too stimulating. i tryed zoloft and serezone, and the gave me migraines. i just got off of paxil, which made me so sluggish and fatigued, and didnt really relieve my depession. the withdrawel effects from the paxil was really terrible, never want to go through that again. so now i have just started celexa. i am only on my second day. i was wondering when is the best time to take it (am or pm)? because if it makes you tired during the day i dont want that as i work and its a active type job. and i dont want it to keep me up all nite, if i take it at nite. because i already have insomnia that i take 50mgs. of visteril for at bedtime. i know i could experiment and try taking it in the am or pm, but i was hoping that i could get some advice from others that have taken it. because i know that even if some antidepessants make you tired, its more your body thats tired, but you cant sleep cause your heads still awake. hope this celexa works as im running out of options. and i need to get this depression under control as i have a son to take care of and a job that i need to keep. some times this battle against depession and anxiety seems like a losing battle. at times lately i just want to give up and say the depression won. but when i look into my pecious 5 year old sons face, i know i got to keep fighting it. i pray one day they will find a miracle pill for this devastating disease. untill then i along with all of you will keep searching for the magic cure. thanks for any future advice

I have been on Celexa for almost 3 years. When I first started I took it in the am but it made me tired. I switched to after dinner (around 6 pm). Then after a few months it did not make me as tired and I switched back to the morning.

A new version of Celexa is coming out in 2 weeks. It should be in the pharmacies on or around September 5. The new version does not cause as much tiredness as the current version. The new version is called Lexapro in the US and it is called Ciprolex in Europe (it's already being sold in Europe).

Ask your doctor about switching to Lexapro in 2 weeks. Take it in the morning since it does not cause very much, if any, tiredness.

TAMYRA - I have something to add to the response I posted a minute a go. If nothing else works, by all means go back to your first drug imipramine. Unless the side effects were too much to take. A lot of people still take that class of drugs with success.

I echo the advice to take it around mid-day. Are you an atypical sufferer (with hypersomnia symptoms and the like to begin with)?

What about a low dose of celexa in combo with buspar? buspar helps to increase the effect of the celexa, and only at higher doses does it become sedating. It's not too stimulating either (no direct epinephrine receptor involved), and the slight dopamine affinity with buspar might help keep you awake and somewhat focused despite the somnolescent effect of them as ADs. Might be a good option.

I had the same prob as you with Effexor, and more so with others like Wellbutrin. Of course, most of the regular SSRI's didn't help my energy level, just added to a latent tired but awake effect like you talked about.

Future forward, I'm looking towards better 5HT1a agonists coming out fairly soon, that like buspar (but hopefully more advantageous), will help treat atypical symptoms as well as augment possible SSRI meds.

Hi,
I take my Celexa (50mg) in the evening since a morning dose made me incredibly tired. That really made a difference--although, I added the extra 10mg two or three weeks ago and I find myself pretty exhausted by lunchtime. My pdoc suggested cutting back to the 40mg but I would like to see if my body can adjust to the extra 10mg since there was a mood change for the better when I am taking 50mg.
