Developing Tolerance to Stimulants Re:Ritalin

Posted by Temoigneur on August 15, 2002, at 1:51:34

Hi, I take a very high dose of anti-depresssants, and a dose of zyprexa - without a stimulant I'm hard pressed to motivate myself to fry an egg.

My pdoc tells me that you gain tolerance to stimulants, and I was wondering if some of the stimulants are different enough from eachother, that once you gained tolerance to one, you could switch to another. So If I kept have to up the dose of dexadrine, could I at some point switch to adderall - or provigil - then back to dexedrine and get the initial effects I got from the dexedrine?

I find that it helpes a little to take a few days off from all-day dex...works best if I take no pstims at all, but even with a little adderall or ritalin to get me through it helps some. How long were you using the dex before you started to max out? A break of a couple of weeks would probably get you back to where you started.

All in all, I think stimulants are a devil's bargain, at least for me. Are the cheerful, focused, high energy hours really worth the inevitable crash? Not sure, but I keep taking them and my pdoc keeps prescribing them.

I got these terrible migrains from ritalin, then switched to adderall.

But adderall lasted in me from 6 in the morning to 10 at night-- even though doctors claim young children will come off it in 4 hrs. that's such a lie, unless I'm hyper-sensitive to it.

If I took all-day adderall, that'd be like two days I wonder.

Anyway, adderall's smoother if it really bothers you to crash. Or add clonidine or tetrex, both alpha blockers, and it'll chill you out enough and leave you with less anxiety if ritalin causes that.

adderall won't cause a crash. I just switched back to ritalin because I enjoy eating lunch too much to miss it, and ritalin lets me decide when to "turn it off" by planning to take it so it's gone in four hours. I like switching to ritalin mode for class and then sober mode for chilling out of class.

Hey Thanks so much for your input, I might doctor about clonodine as I heard it can have anti OCD effects, I guess adderall is a mixture of amphetamines, I've never tried it, hopefully I stumble across a combination that helps me at some point.
