sore throat a medication side effect?

Posted by octopusprime on August 1, 2002, at 6:09:49

hello one and all. i have lurked for a bit here, and i have high respect for the quality of posts and posters on this forum. with that in mind, i post a query:

i take 25 mg seroquel and 20 mg celexa as a part of my daily functioning routine. i do not know my dx, and i suspect the docs have not nailed it down. they suspect BPII (with depression being the problem lately), but won't confirm due to confounding recreational pharmaceutical use.

at any rate, i have had a sore throat for the last few days, and from time to time have had a little difficulty swallowing. it's the kind of sore throat that i would wait out for a week if i wasn't on meds. however, i am concerned it is a side effect of meds. (i have been taking the meds for months and months now with no ill effects).

seroquel's product info warns that if sore throat occurs, to see a doctor. so off to the doc i go, i guess. but why is a sore throat a significant side effect? does it mean i have to stop taking the meds? (i like them the way they are)

any insight is appreciated.

I know a number of people who take both those meds, and I don't believe they have ever suffered that side effect.

Could it be that the dry mouth is so bad it leads to a sore throat? Although, I still don't see why this side effect would appear after you have been on this med for so long...

I guess call your dr, but I think that the most likely culprit is a cold/virus.

Hope you feel better soon...

Maybe the medication is causing (stomach) acid reflux. That can cause a sore throat and difficulty swallowing.

thanks for tips, fairnymph and melinda.

hmmm - maybe it is related to dry mouth - though i am always drinking something during the day, so my mouth never gets a chance to get dry :-)

my doc is not in until tuesday, i guess i will wait and see. it's funny, i've been on seroquel for four months now, and nary a side effect ... then all of a sudden ...

i will watch fluid intakes carefully, hope for the best. hopefully it's not a sign of something more serious - i would hate to give up these meds, as they have been rather good to me.

Sore throat may be symptom of low white cell count

Sore throats may be symptomatic of a low white cell count. Next time you see your doc, ask for a white blood cell count draw.

I get them when my acne drug Accutane gives me a borderline count, which concerns my GP a bit.

Beware.
I have read several warnings that state if you get flu-like symptoms from taking a medicine, it could be the sign of a "serious underlying condition." Not trying to scare anyone, but I would take a sore throat that won't go away as a flu-like symptom. Just be careful!
