Celexa withdrawl progress report please read!

Posted by genelo on June 23, 2002, at 7:34:03

I have been on Celexa 20mg. since last October. I decided to quit all medications. I started reducing by 5mg. on Monday 6/17 and thus far things have been going ok except for some nausea and slight dizziness. However, last night for some reason, I was unable to sleep at all! I even resorted to trying .75 mg of Xanax and still was unable to sleep. I was experiencing severe butterflies (probably due to obsessing about not sleeping. I guess what help I am asking for is in order to maintain the courage to become drug free I need to feel that sometime these witdrawal effects will eventually go away.

Thanks for reading and for any encouragement you can give
Gene

Oh, I hope things get better soon. I was on Celexa too and had a rough time getting off of it. About 4-6 days after each time I reduced the dose, or stopped, I had a backlash of depression and generally bad feelings. But the depression did subside. You will be able to get off of it! My theory about the sleep it that since Celexa causes you to have more available seretonin, which also means more available meletonin, so when you decrease the Celexa, you also temporarily decrease the seretonin and melatonin. That is probably what causes the sleeplessness. Meletonin is involved with causing sleep. Is this helpful?

Did you start on drugs after long term depression (years of it) or was it after a short term depression. If it was after years of depression then you may need to keep taking antidepressants.

Taking antidepressents corrects a chemical imbalance in your body. Why do you want to stop taking them?

You answered a post from me a couple of weeks ago concerning withdrawl from Celexa. I am down to 10mg. of Celexa from the original 20 mg. I started with. I am doing ok, although three times this week I woke at 1:30 or 2:30 in the am and was unable to get back to sleep at all. I did not make a big deal about it and last night when it happened again I went back to sleep and slept the rest of the night without problems.

Do you know if these minor sleep problems even out after being off the meds for a time?

Thank you - Gene
