Geezer - SSRI Poopout - Bipolar... Deja Vu!

Posted by Tap on July 1, 2002, at 16:30:08

I read your post above about a SSRI working well about a year with conswequent poopout, followed by diagnosis Bipolar. Just hit me that I have read it before. Made me wonder if it might be the SSRI that turns depression to bipolar???
Just a thought.
Anyone else experienced this?

SSRIs are widely used in depression and depression if far more common in BP than mania. It is quite common for SSRIs to induce mania in patients who have underlying BP-apparently it occurs in about 0.5% of those who are prescribed SSRIs.

I'm learning something new every day... (Sometimes feel pretty stupid around u all). Well, 5 years ago, all I could say is 'I feel like shit'. Guess it's an improvement in a way - Still do, but have more accurate words for it ;0)

Tap & Ed,

Thanks for the follow up on my post. The whole mess gets very confusing due to conflicting opinions in diagnosis. Following Prozac poop out, a year ago, I went to a research center (The Stanley Foundation - University of Cincinnati). At that point I was DXed Bipolar II, started on Depakote, then several months later, Lamictal (still taking Dep. 750mg. and Lam. 100mg). Well, the Stanley Foundation lost its funding and the new pdoc I am with is back to a DX of common depression. I have been researching every day for the past year and can only confirm I have all the signs of Atypical Depression but "fail" all the on line tests for Bipolar II, every time. Parnate would probably be a natural choice but I am reluctant to deal with side effects, multiple dosing, etc.

In the past 30 years I have been hospitalized 9 times for Major Depression (stress triggered by 24/7 medical job). Totally disability 1997.

At the present time I am considering returning to Prozac with Neltrexone augmentation or combination of Celexa with Wellbutrin to hit all neurotransmitters. I have to go easy on Norep. drugs due to anger/rage problems.

Thanks for your help. I have listed my email address for any direct responses.

Geezer
