Any Experience with Norpramine/Despiramine??

Posted by lucky77 on June 22, 2002, at 0:11:59

I was getting a bit dizzy with all the info on this site. I noticed not a lot of info on Norpramine/despiramine. I am going to see my pdoc next week and discuss the next step for my depression. SSRI's have been bothering me and I do believe she would want to switch me to another class of AD. Anything pos/neg about norpramine??any intestinal effects??wt gain/wt loss??? muscle spasms/or not?? I read several books on side effects, yet it varies from person to person and that is why I want to get feedback from those who were/are on it. and their recommendations. Please respond.

Desipramine made me just a little bit "dopey", so I stopped.

Hi Lucky,

I've been on Desipramine now for about 3 months, working my way up slowly to a theraputic level.
I'm currently on 75mg, which I am having success with, but I feel there is room for improvement.
This is the only AD that hasn't caused weight gain, or sleepiness. The only thing it doesn't seem to help with is P.M.S. (Don't know if you are female, if not sorry about that). I was using it together with Celexa, which worked for about a month then seem to stop, so now I am slowly working on increasing the Desipramine and
maybe possibly augmenting with something else.
It does cause a little dry mouth and sometimes constipation, but nothing you can't live with. I also have a slight case of social phobia which I
really haven't noticed any improvement in, but maybe as I work my way up to a theraputic dose, it will help me there. I think minimal theraputic range is 150mg - I'm halfway there. I would give it a try. Oh I forgot one other side effect at least with me is increased heart rate, but that was with higher dosing(I was on Desip. three years ago at higher dose)around 150 mg. So you see, I am on it again for a second time as it
seems to be a drug that works and doesn't have terrible side effects. Good luck to you. It does take a while to work - at least 8 weeks so if you do decide to trial it, give it time. I know everyone responds differently, so keep in mind that these are my opinions only.

Thank you so much for the info. I was wondering if you got any muscle spasms or headaches??

I feel a little better knowing this info. We all go thru so much to try to get the med that would help and the process is very hard .There were many times that I just wanted to throw everything away and give up . But I am going to be strong and try till I find something that works.
Thank you
Lucky (female)
