what options besides stims for focus and energy?

Posted by krazy kat on May 17, 2002, at 14:41:18

I know this has been answered, but I can't find it. Probably because I can't focus.;)

I'm getting worried. The first few days on Ritalin my focus and energy were better with minimal side effects. I am trying Concerta next week, so I AM hopeful that will work, but right now, I go into weeping fits as soon as the dose is going down, and I'm paranoid most of the rest of the time. Also, the focus is not nearly as good.

What are the other options for people who are stim-intolerant? (Besides AD's?) I must have something to offset Depakote's effects.

Thanks!

Hi KK,

I don't know if you have tried this or not, but, have you considered adding SAMe to the Depakote? I am saying this because I have been tinkering with it off and on, and my mood charts definitely show an energy upswing on the days I am taking it. Another possible option would be adding that oft talked about T3/T4 thyroid augmentation. Another..option would be to *displace* some of the Depakote you are currently taking (2G, yes?) with some Neurontin instead (esp. since you have some OCD/anx. probs, etc.). You might go even further and *displace* even more Depakote with a little Klonopin. Could you possibly get by with Depakote ER 500mg 2x daily (i.e.), with some Neurontin, Klonopin, and SAMe? Dunno. Stuff to think about. See ya in a few days.

Mitch

Am I missing something here? Sorry, I don't know your med history. . .but Ritalin is famous for abrupt ups and downs, which is why it's been generally a lousy med for adults. A world of difference on Dex SR. . .

Have also had even better results adding Provigil to Dex. ..

hope this helps,
Zo

It's not a med, but it works for many people: yoga. Practiced regularly, with a routine especially designed for focus and energy, it can help.
I practice viniyoga and my teacher designs routines for specific purposes. It has helped me with anxuety, focus, self-confidence, etc. I also mix it some with meditation - postures, then breathe retention, mantra (my own, for e.g.: I am strong!), then counterposture, etc...
So if you feel like trying, it could help.
