Lamictal -- Just got sick, should I be concerned?

Posted by Kagami on May 4, 2002, at 5:26:28

Hello! I'm new here, so I guess I should introduce myself.

I'm a 21, female, and have a diagnosis of psychotic depression, as well as disthymia, and OCD. I started going to the psychiatrist a little less than a year ago after I was released from a mental hospital for severe injuries inflicted by myself. That was the second time I have been in a hospital for my self-injury. Anyways, I've been on about eight different drugs so far, and hardly anything seems to work for me. :(

Recently, my psych gave me a starter kit for Lamictal (it contains weeks one and two of treatment - two 25mg tablets every morning) and warned me of Stevens Johnson Syndrome. I went home immediately and researched it, it sounds absolutely horrific and pretty "rare", but I familiarized myself with the signs. You can never be too careful -- especially when dealing with SJS.

I had taken this for about a week. My psych had me in yesterday and changed my Risperdal to Seroquel, which I also received a starter kit for. I took 50mg last night, as well as my 50mg of Lamictal and 200mg of Zoloft (not working, but I've been on it for months.)

Yesterday, and hour after my appointment, I went into a severe injury episode, so I was bandaged heavily and sentenced to weeks of bedrest. I am typing this from a friend's laptop now.

Well, at about 1AM, after I had taken the Seroquel at about 8PM, I woke up coughing up a little mucus, and had terrible chest pain and what felt like tremendous pressure on my lungs. My throat is a little scratchy and feels a little weird when I breathe. Before waking up, I was not sick in the least.

I've read that SJS can staart with flu-like symptoms, as well as upper respiratory tract infection-like symptoms. Well, I've had a respiratory infection before, and this feels a lot like it.

Should I be concerned of SJS because of this? I know my lamictal is low, but so is my weight (5'8", 95lbs.), so medication affects me heavily, usually. Even though this probably has nothing to do with this, my mother is dangerously allergic to sulfa, and I am very allergic to penicillin, two common culprits of SJS.

Please give me some advice if you can, I'm slightly worried. It may just be my nervous side, but, well.. I'm nervous. :)

Thank you,

~K

Well, I was told to watch for a rash, but if I had a reaction to 2! med changes (normally they just change one so if you have a rx, then you know the culprit) like that I would absolutely call my doc- Hope you're feeling better- Judy
P.S. Are you anorexic also?

Thanks. I think I'll contact my psych early Monday. :)

And no, I'm not Anorexic. I actually eat a lot -- must have a good metabolism, I guess. :)

If you are 5'8" I would guess one would need to weigh probably another 15 pounds to be in a healthy range. Perhaps your appetite has been affected by your meds -- please try to eat. -- if you've lost any weight in the last months have them check your thyroid levels. kate
