dexedrine poop out

Posted by jonh kimble on May 3, 2002, at 18:06:54

well, the dex was great while it lasted, which was about 1 hour. it does this every day. works about 1 hour then it simply stops working. doctor said higher dosage, but this caused a really big half hour of power and then a bigger poop out. great. im only dealing with a family doc right now so he doesent know if theres anything i could add or do to change this. anybody here know? what about deprenyl? im suspecting dopamine drain out, considering other dopaminergics do this too. any help would be great.

Is this dexedrine pills or dexedrine spansule? Spansule is supposed to last 10 hrs. For me the spansule lasts about 14 hrs (but I am very odd). Tablet is short acting for most people, not quite as short as an hour, but pretty darn short. If its the tablet then you are getting a big effect from the peak and then nothing, maybe you metabolize it quicker than usual.

Is it the spansule giving you this problem?

i take spansules in the morning and regs in the afternoon. spansules have no effect and short acting ones cause the up and down. thanks for the thought.

Jon,

I onced emailed the company that makes Memantine and they said that in theory it could prevent dexedrine poop-out. However, I don't believe there have been any studies that test this. Memantine might be worth a try, but good luck getting a family doc to prescribe it! Others more knowledgeable than me may be of more help. What symptoms are you taking dexedrine for?

Have you ever had an effect from the spansules? Since its a slow release coated thing I would think there might be people who's GI just doesn't work with it well. You are at least getting an 'up' from the short acting one so that's something, at least a place to start from. I know it sounds crazy but have you considered taking the short acting one every hour or so to prevent the rollercoaster? Do you take tyrosine supplements or any supplements? -- kate

Have you tried Adderall? I only ask because, of the three pstims, people can have very individual results to each. I have a friend who takes 40mg Adderall a day--I wouldn't sleep for a week on that dose. . .

There are also people who are made so CALM by Dex. .. my pdoc has one patient who takes hers before bed!

Best,
Zo

Don't expect human clinical trials on Memantine for dexedrine poopout. The information about this will
be anecdotal. One person on this news group reported anecdotal success with Memantine augmentation for
dexedrine/Adderall poop-out. That's a pretty small sample to date ....
Some people believe in theory in may help to prevent some forms of poop out of
psychostimulants and opioids.

Good Luck,

thanks for the posts everyone.
i am now taking 2 15mg spansules a day. the effects are small and transient. i notice when i have a cigarette the dex effect really goes down for about 30 mins. maybe dopamine drain out? any thoughts here? also how does memantine work? what is it commonly used for? (if it is common at all) itake a few supplements but they are just for general health, not to help my problem. (ginko, multi, salmon oil, lecithin and a couple others) i take dex for a.d.d, chronic fatigue, mild depression and lack of motivation and interest, and most importantly for social phobia. it helps all of these but like i said the effects are either small and transient (spansules) or drastic and short lived. (quick acting pills.)

i was reading a two year old post by someone named anbrew B. seems like a smart guy. he described his social phobia and it sounds almost identical to mine. also, his med responses have been very similar to mine (if not identical.) he reported a reversal to adderal poop out with memantine. interesting. maybe some here knew andrew. does anybody still have contact with him? his response to amisulpride really sparked hope in me, considering that i have suspected that it may help me.

thanks for your time and interest everyone.

There is information on memantine uses at www.memantine.com
The real world data regarding its efficacy for medication
tolerance is minimal at best (the jury is still out for a
statistically significant answer).

Hi Jon,

I would hate to take hope from you or anyone, and that's not my intention, but I just wanted to stress that any success with memantine is purely anecdotal. It's so easy to get excited about case reports. All things being equal, approaching your illness scientifically with a good doctor is your best bet.
