Yes, I noticed some similarity...interesting, this is not the first time I have heard this. They are both phenethylamines, and re-uptake inhibitors, this is the only connection.

Burn out (in terms of ecstacy use) is due to a depletion of serotonin stores, and secondary actions involving the decativation of tryptophan hydroxylase and oxidative stress

Effexor does not deplete serotonin, or cause any appreciable oxidative stress.

*waves to djmmm*

As was said, no Effexor is not neurotoxic the way that MDMA is...

Did you just start taking the Effexor? Because I found it to be slightly 'recreational' in its effects, but only a couple times when I was going up in dosage. I think after you have been taking it regularly, such 'side effects' will subside. This is certainly the case for many antidepressants.

hey thats funny. i had a 1 whole day on effexor at 150mgs in absolute bliss/ euphoria, with no environmental factors leading to or causing this. then it simply went away, it did nothing for the rest of the 3 weeks i tried it.

I've had effexor for a year but use it sporadically...when I get low...but for crazy days...like street parties a little euphoria does you the world of good..plus..they get you out of a physical exercise rut..

I may be sensitive...omega 3 has been giving me euphoria for a year and I was taking that regular...recently its had nothing..

Omega 3 poop out ? But I think my mind just got healthier due to good weather and lifestyle adjustments finally giving me pride..good diet and regular sleep..

I hate to criticize but when I come on this forum it seems like everyone expects the drugs to change your life...

maybe i've gotten the wrong idea..

But anyway If these drugs are safe then why not take them recreationally or to assist training ?

Please READ: this is not a dig on the previous authors threads...

HMMM.. just wondering. I have effexor and experience with MDMA.. Anyway effexor XR known to make you light headed.. careful on it, takes a while to get in your system.. anti-depressents are not happy pills. Ive seen people time and time and time again pop prozac, paxi, effexor whatever and they "think" they are UP and in a better mood after "dropping" them. they dont work in this matter. At best taking more than a recomended dose makes you sick.. YEK! trust me.. ask a doctor or do your own research.. recently had a friend tell me he got the well know alllergy med Claritin and takes one and wow totally clears him up.. this is another example of a drug that does not do that.. Claritin takes awhile (week) to get in you system.. lots of drugs like this EVEN IBUPROFREN needs to get a build up in your system to help properly..
As far as effexor feeling like X or MDMA.. I don't think so.. but if you think and believe a carrot will bring you to higher conciousenes go for it..
Want a safe cheap alternative to anti depressents and ecstassy.. try 5-HTP over the counter.. Purple bottle at any walmart store with a smily face on the bottle.. take 2 a day.. this really will give you a mild to moderat Up feeling of happiness with out screwing with you neural pathways.. Careful with long term use.. do a search on seratonin poisoning..Any presc. Anti depresent can cause this as well.. do your home work..

Anyway careful with the anti Depressants from your doc.. they all have some neg side affects..
Always ask the pharmacist for the molecular make sheet and or clinical data sheet and read all that fine print.. Pain in the butt, but youll know what your in for.. With me Paxil was a mirracle for 7 years for depression.. Then It was time to stop taking it.. Going of was worse than hell. worse than anything words can't describbe. No I did'nt get sad all of the sudden after reducing.. I Had sever physical withdrawl. Electric shocks.. shaking you name it...This was not know or in the clinical sheets at the time i started Paxi. It is now well know.

Again try this 5-HTP if you have mild depression or severe or want a safe recreational high.. Its mild happpy feeling. So dont expect a big kick in the but like a full x roll.. come on its over the counter.. I can see this being pulled soon because of the possible Seratonin poisoning with really long longterm use.. some on will abuse it and sue.. All good things tend to come to an end..

Please comment to my post if you have any knowledge to pass. Thanks for reading. Mark

I have not taken Effexor but tried Paxil for treatment of depression. I thought it felt a lot like the feeling I get on Ecstasy before it really kicks in, that weird feel between normal and euphoria. I do not take Ecstasy any more, sometimes I believe Ecstasy could have caused my depression.

Mark, yes, it does take at least a week to get this stuff stored up- that doesn't mean you won't actually feel effects from it before that. Especially because as one's system builds it up, it's adding a foreign substance.

Within 20 minutes of taking my Celexa, I got this sudden feeling like I was a content little child, very soothing, and that "how sweet it is to be loved by you" lyric running repetitively in my head. I'm a college student. I hate James Taylor. I couldn't even recall what song was going through my head 20 minutes later, not until a few days later.

And I knew full well that SSRIs take 2-4 wks.- I got the feeling before I thought of possible causes, or even remembered I took the drug.

I also got the "stoned" effect within a week or so for a day or two. That occurs in some as the serotonin levels are tweaked around with, during which the body adjusts to the level not previously occuring in the brain. I also got it, surprisingly enough, when I stopped celexa 6 months later.

Moreover, vivid dreams-- and I forgot when mine began occuring- do occur within at least a week or two, and I do remember the excessive, unquenchable yawning within the first few days of Celexa.

Yes, it obviously takes awhile to build up any SSRI. Yet the most unique side effects (of the ones listed on the pack) tend to occur and go away within the first few weeks. I swear Celexa didn't do anything for me for the 6 months I was on it, besides give me vivid dreams at the beginning.

When the SSRI makers tell you it takes 2-4 weeks to kick in, they're talking about the actual, therapeutic objective of the drug- not the side effects the mostly occur before then and soon go away.

Hey ya'all...
I've tried a lot of SSRI's which (in my mind) are just time released amphetamine analogs. *whatevs* http://www.erowid.org/index.shtml has a little bit of information as does http://www.dancesafe.org .

My experience was also with Paxil which I went on for anxiety. And let me tell you, I ROLLED LIKE A MOTHER FUCKER! it wasn't so fantastic, as I got none of the "pleasureable" feelings and all of the "weirdness" that was described above just before you start to roll. I would take the 20mgs at night and wake up in the morning faced! *kids!*
I dunno bout these drug companies...
Welbutrin was a good alternative as it effects Dopamine mostly (also an amphetamine analog), but hasn't made me roll, just have some similar "highs" when I haven't taken my dose on time and then take it a little later. .. Kinda fun.

<< is also an ex-E user, I think it caused my depression/anxiety as well.. kinda sad .

If it does, it probably won't last. If it does you might be bipolar. I had a high the first day I took celexa, after that I evened right out.

This is lovely i hate doctors i've been taking klonopin for 4 years for GAD and my shrink was dead set 4-5 months ago on taking me off to put me on this i left that shrink and am being treated by my physician now same 2MG klonopin twice a day..

effexor sounds like one hell of a potent speed i cant beleive they use it for anxiety disorders.. un-be-f*cking-leivable but it doesent surprise me when i was a kid they had me on all kinds of crap just about every anti-physcotic (haldol, thioxolene, melleril, risperdol) just about every anti-depressant at the time and for no other reason than i just didnt feel like going to school.

I came across this thread in contemplation of wether my decision to literaly tell off my phyciatrist violently and leave her was a good decision and from the information on effexor i've gathered mostly from rxlist.com which is very exstensive i would say YES!

They say it can be used to treat anxiety but at the same time it does the exact opposite of a REAL sedative or tranquilizer like ativan or klonopin. the real sedatives depress the central nervous system and decrease its electrical activity and is time tested and works in many more people than not whileas these SSRI's and Seratonin re-uptake inhibiator drugs are constently under-going back-and-forth "new findings" which are usualy always the terrible and traumatizing side effects that follow long term use long after the drug companies said the drugs were "relatively safe"

I would like to try this effexor now just to know. Some things you just need to know. Most of my anguish comes from the fact the absolute miracle drug that i am on is a class 4 controlled substance that forced me to loose my 2 handguns due to michigan gun control laws and is illegal to drive on even although it doesent affect my motor skills at all.

I would bet my health (probably going to literaly) that this effexor is far more of a threat to medicine than any benzodiazapine but it's reputation like all anti-depressants will likely be pampered.

I found the same in the first few weeks with fluoxetine the first couple of times I was prescribed it.

The serotonin rush was very much like a small dose of ecstasy.
