For me, Depakote caused:

1. 30 lbs weight gain
2. Hair to fall out
3. Depression
4. Anergy
5. Anhedonia

Aside from that, it was fine.

Oops, I forgot one. Add to my list above: 6. RASH (nm) » Cindylou

WOW!!!!!!!!!! Guess I'll wait until I meet with my holistic docs before trying that one!

Thanks Ron,
cindy

P.S. I haven't tried SAM-e since I last posted you. I've been feeling so messed up lately I didn't want to add something to the mix to blame it on.

Cindy,

Do not let my experience with Depakote influence your decision. Remember, I'm very med sensitive. Yes, I know you also are med sensitive, but YMMV on Depakote. Depakote is a very good mood stabilizer for lots of people.

Cindylou,
Though I don't find Depakote's side effects pleasant, (minor weight gain, minor hair loss, menstrual problems?), it's a fabulous med for anger and agitation.

I usually ditch meds that give me upsetting side effects. But the stability and lessening of my short fuse are nothing to take for granted. So this med, at a low dose, is a keeper! Combining it with Neurontin allows me to keep my dose lower than if I took it alone.

YMMV, but I would not rule this one it. It has some GOOD effects too.

Chloe

I noticed in your post that you mentioned menstrual problems. I've noticed some "changes" and I'm wondering what side effect you experience in that area--if you don't mind me asking. If you do, I completely understand.
thanks

Tina,
I am not sure what is going on...And I don't know if I can blame this massive bleeding on Depakote.

I have always had pms and heavy, irregular periods. So I have been on the pill. I finally found one (Yasmin) that helps with PMS and doesn't cause anxiety, weight gain, etc., etc. But I was only taking the active pills, because when I go off the pill for that week break, I go into an inconsolable depression/distorted thinking...

But my Gdoc said if I have started bleeding heavily, (which happened about 3 month post starting depakote) I should stop the pill for a week. Well, I thought I was bleeding heavily before. Now with no BCP on board, I can't go an hour without an accident, when I have both a tampon and pad in place. So, this is probably too much detail...

So, I wonder if depakote does have some effect on BCP's and perhaps menstrual cycles in general...I do know dep. is metabolized in the liver, so perhaps it's eating up some of the pill, that would usually protect me from bleeding. I just don't know the pharmacology of it all...

I am not sure I am answering your question. It's so hard to think through my depression, and panic about how I am going to go to work tomorrow, etc. Can I take a bathroom break every 45 minutes to prevent an accident? I am just so tired of bleeding. I was hoping going off the pill would slow things down. But the opposite happened.

What are you noticing? Are you on a BCP and depakote as well?

I hope I this helps...ask me more if I was unclear...
Chloe
