Ambien or Sonata ???

Posted by Optimistic on April 19, 2002, at 10:11:29

I am currently trying to stop the Remeron that I have been on for about one year.I will soon be down to zero. In the process it has become very difficult to fall asleep and to stay asleep. Anybody have any experience with Ambien or Sonata? Which would be better and why? Which would be less likely to leave me feeling hung over the next day? Thanks to all.

Anybody have any experience with Ambien or Sonata?

Yes, both, started with S-, didnt hold me, A-,as instructed: to keep increasing until got to sleep and stayed asleep. I now take 30mg, right RIGHT before I get into bed. I also make sure I havent eatten two hours before bed time. That makes the response much more consistant.

Which would be better and why? There are some great threads here, I encourage you to do a search in the archives.

People respond differently to each, s- as i understand it is not as strong and works in a different way.

Which would be less likely to leave me feeling hung over the next day?

both should not interfere That is my understanding, and my experience. They get out of your body fast.

Ambien has a more of a half life than sonata. Ambien should help you sleep for about 4hrs or maybe more. Sonata, is faster onset, and may only get 2 hrs. I would say ambien is better. If you awake, take another 10mg to total 8hrs.
Im also on remeron and im sick of the weight gain. Sonata is good for maybe a quick power nap if you didnt get a good night sleep before. Ambien only allows me to sleep for 4 hrs, then i wake right up, sometimes anxious.

Another alternative, is maybe 1mg of klonopin with 10mg of ambien. Or if you increase the remeron to 45mg, less weight gain, and if you cannot fall asleep at 45mg, take an ambien with it.

Im going to try this soon.

I have used both Ambien (still) and Sonata. Both have VERY short half-lives, so as the others have said, the don't last long. Sonata made me very anxious, and may have triggered panic attacks in me. I had taken Ambien for a few years from my GP, had my Pdoc get me off of it as soon as I started seeing him about 4 years ago. Finally, got on it again about 6 months ago, and use 15mg of Tranzene (very weak benzo) along with it. I saw a post the other day, which I tried, to try and deal with the short time of sleep from Ambien, and that was to take another 5 mg if I woke up and still had at least 4 hours of "bed" time. That worked for me, but I don't know if my GP will change my dose to do that. I could try 5 and 5 and see what that does. Anyway, w/o a benzo supplement, you are only going to get a few hours of straight sleep with either Ambien or Sonata. There is some discussion whether or not these meds are addictive, personally, I believe they clearly CAN be. But I took Ambien for at least 2 years at one point w/o increasing dose. It may lose its efficacy after awhile, but that too is not objectively true across the board for all.
My advice? If you can tolerate Ambien, it is the better of the two, but try to get the benzo booster to maintain your sleep.

P.S. this may be obvious, but keep it in mind

HI,

I tried Ambien several years ago. Instead of putting me to sleep it put me in a half sleep/half awake state. During this period I would do stuff around my apt, but really didn't know what was going on. Needless to stay I wouldn't use again and wouldn't recommend if to any other people.
