Topamax

Posted by tb on April 14, 2002, at 18:09:55

Hi
Just started taking Topamax for my bulimia and compulsive overeating. I've had no side effects but I've also had no relief either. What's the turn around on this medication? What's the timeline of relief that people have experienced on this medication?
Thanks
TB

Topamax seems to take several weeks to work on appetite. Then it will decrease appetite and increase satiety - you'll feel full after what seems like a smaller portion.

I started my Topamax at 25 mg. and increased 25 mg. per week over a 3 or 4 week period. The appetite decrease started at about 50 or 75 mg. (I can't remember which), which was at about the 2nd or 3rd week. And it really worked well. I was just never hungry. It was great! Good luck.

From my own experience with Topa, the sexual side-effects worsened with the increased dosage. I am currently on 350 mg and do have trouble with low libido and sexual dyfunction.

At the lower doses, it was not a problem. But at the lower dosage, I did not do as well at all in other areas of my life. What a trade off.

Hmm, can't have your cake and eat it too? :-(

Are you on any other meds?

Topamax hasn't affected libido at all as best I can tell (except I don't have much to start with, but it hasn't gone up or plunged down like on SSRIs). I am on a bunch of other meds however, so who knows.

I didn't see a noticable difference in libido. However, I did have other side effects which caused me to quit. My feet, hands and face became tingly. My feet actually reached a point of painfully stinging. And the fingers on one hand began twitching. First with just my thumb, then gradually all 5 fingers. My pdoc said these things wouldn't cause permanent damage, but I decided I didn't want to live long-term with the stinging feet thing. So I'm thinking of shelling out the bucks to try Meridia for weight loss - and going back to Depakote!

I haven't tried Tegretol, but I was going to ask my doc about it at my next appt. I haven't heard much about it in the way of side effects. I've just always heard, "If you want to gain 20 lbs, take Depakote; if you want to lose 20 lbs, take Topamax." I've only tried these two.
