Effexor side effects

Posted by Kelty on April 9, 2002, at 0:33:18

Just wondering if anyone has had bladder problems on Effexor. I am having increased urinary urgency and constancy which seem to coincide with my starting it.

I didn't experience that on Effexor XR, and I haven't heard of that side effect. Perhaps you just have a coincidental urinary tract infection? Check with your doctor in any case...

YES YES YES!!!!!!

This has been my primary difficulty with Effexor, which otherwise has been effective for me.

I have urgency and frequency and it is extremely frustrating! It starting soon after I got to a therapeutic dose of effexor (about 5 years ago).

I did a lot of info searcing and learned that there are serotonin receptors in the ureter and bladder. There was some discussion of this last year. I'll try to search and give you the citation.

Thanks so much for letting me know it was not just all in my head! I have stopped the Effexor for now, I was at a low dose so I could do that, and I will see if the whole thing calms down. If you find more info, I would love to see it.

Thanks again, Kelty

I am currently on lexapro and have the same bladder problems you are describing. My doctor claims that this could not be a possible side effect for lex, so I have been searching for answers. I am sorry you are having these problems--THEY SUCK!!!!! Good luck......I am not quite ready to go off the lex so I guess I will just deal. Keep me posted.

Ye. This is a noradrenergic peripheral side effect.

Switching to SSRI (Prozac, Zoloft, etc...) would solve the problem.

A beta blocker such as Inderal will counter the side effects you describe.
