What is the Most Sedating Dose of Remeron?

Posted by fachad on April 6, 2002, at 21:51:17

What is the most sedating dose of Remeron? I've heard that it gets less sedating at "higher" doses.

Is is 7.5, 15, 30, or 45mg? I am guessing that 30 or 45 may be too high and cause less sedation?

Any experiences?

either 15 or 7.5, 60 mg somewhat activating (nm)

Fachad,

At one point, I was up to 90mg Remeron, taken at 15mg divided daily doses;I was able to function without too much lethargy, and even managed to pass a few exams whilst dosed up at this level.
Personally, I don't subscribe to the 'it's less sedating at higher doses' theory at all.I think that coincidentally, by the time one has titrated to a higher dose, the body has just had ample time to adapt to the sedating effects, which probably would have worn off with time, regardless of dose increases.I speak from personal experience here, because I took this med. for around 9 or 10 months. The first month was spent in a lethargic stupor at 15mg, but I'd become used to its effects by week 5, and hardly felt any daytime sedation at all, continuing through week 7 or 8, when I moved up to 30mg, and 45 a month later etc.

iv been using remeron for about 1 yr or more. i started at 30mg which was nice, for first week, sedated but that wore off. Its a great sleeping pill, antianxiety pill, ad all in one. To give you some pharmocology, at 15mg, it targets the histamine 1 blockade, causing sedation. at 30mg, it targets both h1 and 5ht2 receptor blockade, at 45mg and above, it blocks alpha 2 ne. I actually upped my remeron to 45mg and had a hard time falling asleep, and felt more arousal. Im sure 60mg for me would be activating, and good for sexual dysph.

I also take 25mg of desipramine, to counteract some of remerons sedation. Some side effects are increase sweating and heart rate. But now, when i get zoloft up to 100mg, my pdoc is dropping desipramine. If zoloft kills my sex drive, i may up the remeron to 45mg at night with some ambien.

if you suffer from extreme insominia, 15mg to start is good. even 30 knock me out. alpha 2 NE blockade is good for arousal. Maybe to augement SSRI sexual dysph. exp paxil. killed my sex drive making me more depressed.

I started at 30 mg and was knocked out. Went up gradually to 45 and was a bloody zombie and really spacey. I have dropped down to 15 and can feel things much better and not as numb and do NOT notice any difference in sedation. I may even go lower. It really affects people in many ways. I have heard of both so it is really hard to judge. take care all

Where did you get the information that Remeron's alpha 2 autoreceptor antagonist property starts at doses above 45 mg/day?

Alpha2 antagonism is the main characteristic of the antidepressant effect of Remeron, and the dose range of Remeron is 15 - 45 mg. So it sounds quite contradictory to what Organon and other studies I've read say.

Reference please!!

As I have mentioned in the past, I took Remeron for more than 2 years. Gained about 30 lbs. Found it most sedating at 45mg. It would make it hard for me to walk straight. I would have to keep my hand on walls at 45mg. 30mg and 15mg never did that.

cheers.
