Is there a stimulant for me?

Posted by Thrud on April 2, 2002, at 22:58:25

Hi everyone.

I have some questions regarding stimulants. I need something that:

1) Reduces my fatigue.

2) Does not impair cognition.

3) Does not impair sexual function (VERY important!!!)

Has anyone "discovered" such a drug? Any suggestions even?

Thanks.

Thrud

Dex, Adderall, Wellbutrin to some degree (nm)

You are not alone in wanting an end to symptoms which make life troublesome. I hope these below references open your eyes to two of the best stimulants:

MODAFINIL - 1(your first requirement): "The medication Modafinil is found to improve quality-of-life benefits such as the reduction of fatigue over an extended period of time without producing the debilitating side effects of other medications." ----AORN Journal, September 1998.

2(still your 1st req.) "In the present study, treatment with 200 mg/day modafinil for 2 weeks resulted in a significant improvement in fatigue scores for all three fatigue scales when compared with scores obtained after the placebo run in phase." --Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, & Psychiatry, Feb 2002

Your 2nd Requirement, Cognition:
"Exploratory latencies and activity in a four hole-board apparatus were not modified by modafinil administration. These experiments are not the first or the last that will demonstrate a delay-dependent working memory-enhancing effect of modafinil." --NeuroReport. February 12, 2001.

*Your 3rd Requirement: Sexual dysfunction with modafinil is not listed as having more than 1% of prevalence in clinical studies (PDR)
http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic2/modafinil_ad.htm

SELEGILINE - an MAO-B Inhibitor that is metabolized into methamphetamine and has been used for depression.

1) "Both selegiline and placebo were well tolerated. Improvements favoring the selegiline group were suggested on ratings of fatigue, memory and motor/psychomotor performance..." --Neurology. 54(1):233, January 11, 2000.

2) "Their review of 17 trials concludes that, while the findings were varied, the balance was weighted toward improvement in both cognitive function and behavioral symptoms." --American Journal of Nursing, May 97

3) Table 1 on Montastruc: J of Clin Neuropharmacol, Volume 23(5).Sept/Oct 2000.271-275 says that the rare report of impotence to the French version of the FDA was listed as "doubtful" (the impotence was assumed to be not related to the medication selegiline)... I hear of others on Babble saying they had improved sex drive on Selegiline.

OTHER IDEAS: Vivactil (protriptyline), plain old Prozac, Ginseng supplementation, Wellbutrin, OTC Ephedra (Ma Huang), etc.

Cheers: Psychiatry will come through for you.

Wellbutrin SR may meet all your requirements

Dexedrine, Adderall, & Wellbutrin SR all decrease fatigue & increase cognition/concentration.

I believe Wellbutrin SR is said to be sexually stimulating.

Amphetamines such as Dexedrine or Adderall can sometimes be sexually stimulating or have no effect either way (me) but they usually don't impair sexual functioning. The only sexual side effect i've heard of, which may be positive for some, is that it may take longer to ejaculate so you do last longer, but the ability to ejaculate is not impaired/disturbed as it often is with the SSRI antidepressants (Prozac, Zoloft etc).

thanks all. (nm)
