dexadrine question?

Posted by geno on April 1, 2002, at 9:13:10

Does dexadrine cause anxiety say as a cup of coffee or ephedrine. Does dexadrine cause one to be more outgoing, talkative and semi euphoric/ I know three beers answered this, but any others respond well to such?

Geno, caffeine does little for me, but valerian root (used for relaxation & sleep gave me the jitters). Obviously, meds which should do one thing will affect some in a paradoxical manner.

Like 3 Beer, I think Dexedrine tends to make people more sociable, talkative, & outgoing. It certainly does for me, but then I'm not at all a shy person. But on Dexedrine, I need to remember to keep my mouth a little more shut as it really speeds & focuses my brain & my mouth has always followed.

My grown son has Asperger syndrome, a form of autism with extremely high intelligence. He's a reserved person, disliking social situations & doesn't wish to change but even he, when on his Dexedrine, can deal with social situations easier.

I think you may find a point interesting. I watched a documentary about the brain. It gave two groups of people stimulants. One group knew what they were getting & what to expect from the medication. They very much enjoyed the effects of it. The other group were told they were getting a placebo & didn't expect any physical/mental changes but they still felt them. Due to the fact they didn't know what was happening, they became very agitated & anxious. They reacted differently even though the changes were the same in both groups. It seems that what you may expect can have an effect on how you'll react.

For me, no. I find Dex much easier to handle than coffee. It also doesn't play havoc with my blood sugar-- a plus.

I only wish. As a stabilized bipolar II, I miss my euphoria!
I remember clearly my first dose of Dex, in late 1997--it felt as if oil poured on troubled waters, in my brain. Calming and organizing all at once. Sure, if I take extra (15mg instead of 10) I'll be up later--but far less so than a second cup of coffee. And the other thing about pstims--they are not magic. The days come and go and life is always changing. What meds do, ideally--what we should be aiming for--is lifting the lows, lowering the highs---in a good way, not blunting!-- finding a baseline, a solid foundation of well-being upon which our lives can take place. Ideally, our resilience is increased -- dramatically, and that may be a fruitful way to think the "cure" from depression. Resilence--when we find ourselves bouncing back from any lows, any setbacks. When we have flexibility of mood and outlook, and feel just naturally equipped to cope.
