Do LIGHT BOXES make electric bill skyrocket?

You need to do your homework about light boxes to decide what brand is best for you. It's like asking what dishwasher or what car is best - it depends on what you want.

First, make sure it can provide at least 10,000 Lux at a comfortable distance. That's the minimum amount needed, the equivalent of a cloudy summer day. After that it basically comes down to looks, ease of moving it about, how it's set up, price, etc. Mine is a plain jane model - functional, not pretty, and it's cheap. It only uses 75 watts but puts out 10,000 Lux. I use it a lot (not for light therapy so much but for bright lighting at night - I hate long, dark winter nights) & never have had to replace the bulb yet.

Just go to http://www.google.com & do a search on light boxes therapy prices.

Or go to the SAD folder at pb-tips (link at top of babble page). There is a folder of manufacturers there.

I chose mine because it seemed like a good value--considering price and strength and distance--it delivers 10,000 at 27 inches, and was on sale at the time I bought it because it was being discontinued (they have reassured me that functionally the new model is basically the same, so parts, bulbs, etc. will not change). It has served me well.

I also have a desk lamp version at work. It delivers 10,000 at 14 inches. It tilts down as a lamp and up as a light box. It is pretty good-I think I spent a bit too much for it, as I found the casing to be rather cheap plastic, etc. but it serves the purpose as a second light box if I miss my morning light routine at home, and it is a decent lamp.

I realize I didn't address the electric bill question--I don't know because electricity is included in my rent. SOrry.
