Need Advice: Switching from Effexor to Paxil

Posted by MDR on March 11, 2002, at 10:11:44

I am currently on 75m./day of Effexor for GAD and moderate OCD -- been on it for two weeks. My doctor is talking about moving me to Paxil instead of Effexor and feels I can just stop cold turkey on the Effexor on one day and start taking Paxil the next day. Do I need to be tapered off the Effexor for awhile before taking the Paxil?

Since you have only been on 75 mg for 2 weeks, then maybe you could just quit when you start Paxil. See how you feel the first day off Effexor. If you feel bad, then gradually taper off of it.

I was on 225 mgs and was tapered off somewhat before switching to Paxil. Went to 150 for 3 days then 75 for three days then straight to 10 mgs of Paxil for a few days and up to 20 (and up and up). Paxil at higher doses ended up causing me icky side effects, but the switch from 75 mgs of Effexor to a low dose of Paxil wasn't bad at all.

Good luck.

Penny, Just curious as to the side effect problems you had at higher doses of Paxil? Thanks for you feedback.

I went up to 80 mgs of Paxil. The side effects for me were mostly loss of appetite, anxiety, tremor & insomnia. Very frustrating. I had a brief positive response, but it didn't last and my pdoc at the time thought the answer was to raise the dose, despite my complaining about side-effects. My new pdoc explained to me how more is not necessarily better in the case of Paxil.

Best wishes with your switch.

Being only at 75mg a day, I'm pretty sure you can handle switching right over to Paxil. Since it's a SSRI you shouldn't have any withdrawl symtoms. The reson I say this is because I was on 150mg (effexor) a day. I quit cold turkey and starting having HORRIBLE HORRIBLE withdrawl symtoms. I finally couldn't take it and popped some zoloft and the symptoms sudsided.
