Natural Energy booster

Posted by NikkiT2 on February 4, 2002, at 9:33:23

I;m at my wits end and really need something that is going to give me a boost of energy... I;m on Effexor (going to start withdrawing from 300mg tomorrow!) and Zyprexa (5mg).

I need something over the counter or herbal or natural... I don;t want caffiene as I'll just climb the walls. But I need something.

Nikki:

My suggestion is sublingual B vitamins. Source Naturals has one called Coenzymate B Complex that is good. Sublingual is good b/c sometimes we don't absorb them through our intestines and they are fast acting. Good luck.

Nikki, I find SAM-E has given me an energy boost. In addition to the B-Vitamins I have heard an OTC supplement called Co-enzyme Q10 is very helpful. Is it the weather in the UK at the moment do you think might be having a bad effect on your energy levels?

Phenylalanine

You could try phenylalanine. Five weeks I've been oon it, and I'm still significantly more awake than before I took it.

I must take it on an empty stomach (i.e., 1 hour before or two hours after meals). I take it in the morning, otherwise, I can't get to sleep at night. I take 1.5 g.

l-phenylalanine or Primatene tablets (ephed. hcl)

I also found l-phenylalanine to give a good energy boost (I found Twinlab l-phenylalanine to be an effective brand). L-phenylalanine easily crosses the blood brain barrier & eventually converts to norepinephrine & dopamine giving an energy boosting & anti-depressant effect. The usual dose is 500 to 1500mg with water on an empty stomach (if you have any protein at all in your stomach the phenylalanine will not be absorbed). I found it is good to set your alarm for a few hours before you have to get up for work, take the l-phenylalanine with a full glass of ice water & immediately go back to sleep & then you will be energized at work all day. You have to give l-phenylalanine a chance, probably a week before you will notice any energy increase, with higher doses giving more of an increase. I would NOT use DLPA- which is d,l phenylalanine unless you have chronic pain, because d,l phenylalanine has much more difficulty passing through the blood brain barrier. L-Tyrosine (the precursor to dopamine) does not cross the blood brain barrier & has been shown in trials to have no effect on most people.

The most energizing agent available over the counter is Primatene tablets. Primatene also is good to take in the morning if you have trouble waking up for work. Primatene tablets contain d,l ephedrine hcl USP which is the strongest form of ephedrine available & I have found it to have effects similar to Dexedrine or Adderall but unfortunately with absolutely no euphoria & some dysphoria (rapid heartbeat). It works well with 200 mg of caffeine, & could be used in this combination as a weight loss drug/thermogenic that is safer & more effective than Xenadrine. The maximum dose at one time is 50 mg (4 tablets) but that might make you too wired & dysphoric. I would recommend that you take 25 mg (2 tablets). The effects last a fairly long time 4-6 hours. But be foreworned- weight loss, lack of appetite, rise in blood pressure and pulse, insomnia, & rapid heartbeat are the usual side effects (although caffeine has similar side effects). Do not exceed 100 mg in 24 hours.

Most importantly!
Do not use if you have high blood pressure or heart problems &
Do not use the herbal form of ephedra- the herb ephedra is much more dangerous than the ephedrine in Primatene tablets which is USP certified pharmaceutical grade. You never know exactly what is in the ephedra herbal formulations, & so they not only do not work as well, they are more dangerous. It appears nearly all the complaints of ephedrine complications come from the herbal form ephedra found in Xenadrine, metabolife, ripped fuel & various others- I have never heard of complaints from Primatene or Bronkaid (weaker l-ephedrine sulfate) asthma tablets.

So would l-pheny be available in a health type shop.. I was pondering a xenedrine tablet this morning - I am totally desperate to lose weight, and thought ot might be coupled with some energy uplift too.. But I'll look out for l-phenylalanine instead.. I'm in the UK but hopefully they;'ll be sold here.

L-Phenylalanine

Yes, l-phenylalanine would be in a supplement/health-type store, and maybe even in the drug store. Look in the amino acid section.

You might want to read more about phenylalanine or talk to your doctor or someone more knowledgeable before taking it.

As drugs or supplements go, however, in my experience, this supplement was an easy one to take, with the only side effect being loss of appetite. It feels like taking caffeine, but it is more calming than caffeine I think.

Good luck. Let us know how you are doing

re: ephedrine illegal in the UK

Ephedrine/ephedra has been declared illegal in the UK (even though some UK retailers are selling ephedra illegally, but I found that an asthma medicine called Do-Do Chesteze that contains 18.3 mg of ephedrine. So you might be able to take a max of 3 at one time. BUT, chesteze containes theophylline which is stronger & more adverse prone than regular caffeine. The website I found recommends mixing Theophylline with Caffeine found in Pro plus tablets but i'm not sure that is a good idea. I would probably leave out the aspirin because of its adverse effects on the stomach, & i've never heard of aspirin used for weight loss before.

here is the ECA weight loss (thermogenic) sight link:

But be forewarned: Amphetamines, & Diet pills like the strongest one Didrex (Benzphetamine) are safer than ephedrine because they cause less of an increase in blood pressure.

I'm on effexor also and started taking pills for energy. If you want something all natural, try siberian gensing. Big Lots sells it for $3 a bottle. Xenadrine has 20 mg. of ephedrine. That is $25 for a bottle of 90. If you go to ephedrineforsale.com. It comes in 8mg. pills. If all you want is the energy, not to loose weight, it is probably cheaper. Be careful though. Ephedrine is pretty much a legal form of meth.

Althoug they are chemically related, (Amphetamin is reduced ephedrine) their effects are completely different.

Anybody tried Taurine? (NM)
